What Does the Dog Think When You're Sick?

I've had a terrible cold for almost a week now - the worst cold I've had in a while. Rita has been very sympathetic. And very interested in my chicken soup lunches. (Actually, maybe she wasn't sympathetic. Maybe she was thinking, "She's in a weakened state. I can probably take her and score that chicken soup!)

Although sick, we still managed to go for at least a very short walk each day. (Our neighborhood is very hilly so not great for going for an "easy" walk.) Luckily, Rita is a mellow girl so can handle a few days of short walks.

Unlike other dogs we've had in the past! I originally posted this video 4 years ago (wow! time flies). I'll share it again since I don't think too many folks saw it last time. I'd been sick and stuck on the sofa in my PJs all day, so Abby didn't get to go for her walk that morning. (Stop by the original post for more details, or an explanation of the video title - if you happen to notice it on YouTube - in the first comment.)

I was hoping she'd come crash beside me and rest her head on my leg with a look that said, "I'm so sorry you're not feeling well, Momma." But, no. This is what she did:

She was a such a brat. We loved that brat like crazy. Miss her. (But I do very much appreciate Rita's sweetness!)

How about your pets? Are they sweet and understanding when you're sick? Or do they still think you should get up and play?

  1. Love Abby barking at the end of that video. Sort of like, come on Mom, get with it and feel better! Rudy is thrilled when I have a cold because he stalks for used kleenex. It's his one real mischief thing. He knows they are a no-no and looks so guilty. He doesn't shred them like he did when he was a puppy, but boy, he wants to. LOL Hope you're feeling better soon. I've had this viral crud and it's just really going away now.

    1. That's so funny about Rudy and the tissues. Abby had tissue-issues as well. She loved to shred any paper. Of course we encouraged her bad habit by handing her every day's junk mail to shred. :)

Ugh on you being sick too. Everyone I know who's had this thing says it takes forever to get over it! The hubs is on week 3. I'm only at one week. Ugh.

  2. While I think Booker T and Cassius realize when either my husband and I are sick, they still have needs they want met as well. Boxers are such high energy and since we have owned at least one at all times during the last 23 years, we know that unless we are REALLY REALLY sick, we need to make time to get them out or at least play some games in the house. Feel better soon!

    1. Rita's BFF is a very high-energy boxer so I know all about that! You probably have to be on death's door to not exercise them!

  3. Abby was a mischievous little beast! Sure miss her crazy ways.

    1. She was for sure. Such a brat. Miss her nuttiness.

  4. They are very sympathetic to Dog Dad. Bailey will lay next to Dog Dad to keep him warm. However, when Mom is sick, not so much. Poking and prodding to try to get Mom up.

    1. Well, that's very nice for Dad but not so nice for Mom! Funny though. They know who runs their lives! :)

  5. Daisy would lay with me and be so sweet. She didn't care what we did as long as we were together. I had the flu once and couldn't take her for walks for a week and she never once complained. Cocoa. Not so much. She wants to go go go and if she is ready then I better be ready or she will start grabbing things and running around with them until I take her :) That was a cute video of Abby!! Hope you feel better soon!!

    1. Yeah, I can see Cocoa being a bit more like Abby. As you can see in the video, she was definitely a "grab things and run around with them" kinda girl. Even if the "things" were on my feet!

  6. Awe what a sweetheart! Kilo does the same, extra cuddles and hugs is his go-to cure.

  7. Now that my dogs are older, they can let sleeping humans lie ;-)

Aren't you so happy you filmed the toe-eater?! How adorable!

    1. Yes, so glad I got that video of our toe-eater. Wish I'd gotten some videos of our Bailey. She's the one I really screwed up on. I have *one* totally lame video of her. That was mostly back in the day before cameras on phones, but I could have video'd her with my camera. Dummy!

  8. Are you kidding? It's all about Blueberry - she's not very understanding and will definitely try to manipulate me. Sometimes she will try to trick me into thinking I haven't fed her. But she is a very good snuggler so when it is snuggle time - she will curl right up with me and that always makes me feel better. I think if she could talk she'd tell me to snap out of it already. The morning after my gum graft surgery, she jammed her big fat paw into my jaw to wake me up. I guess she was testing me to see if I was faking or not? ;)

    1. Oh, ow about the paw in the jaw after the graft surgery. But at least she snuggles when it's snuggle time. Rita only snuggles when it's cold! Which isn't all that often here!

  9. Oh no! Not you, too! I hope you feel better. I'm right there with you with the terrible cold situation. Luckily my girls are pretty understanding and they've been okay with less activity. That's so funny that Rita was interested in your chicken soup! LOL

    1. That's good that your girls are understanding. Sorry to hear you also have a cold!

  10. It depends on how sick I am. If I just have a cold or whatever, Mr. N thinks we should still go for a walk. When I had my wisdom tooth out, he basically just napped with me for three days (aside from short walks with the bf).

    1. That's sweet. I'm not sure what Rita would do if I was too sick to do even a short walk. Hopefully I won't find out!

  11. Oh how I needed THIS today!!!!!!!! I am also sick (ear infection) and have been getting sick for the past few weeks (damned airplanes!!)......this cracked me up!!!
Dakota is sensitive and will lick my hand when I am on the couch like you were, but Rita's reaction is PRICELESS..........she MADE YOU LAUGH and laughter is the BEST medicine of all!!!
    Feel better soon!

    Cole has zero sympathy.
He just avoids me, and I wonder if he's considering when to cull me from the herd so it can finally be he and dad.

  13. I think Abby was just trying to entertain you and get your mind off of not feeling well!
I get no sympathy around here, thank goodness I don't get sick very often (knock wood). As far as the dogs are concerned, there is no excuse for not getting outside and playing ball, no matter what!

    1. Yeah, I know how those beagles can be! Our Bailey was never very sympathetic either!

  14. We let Mom have some slack when she is really sick which thankfully isn't often. Sometimes if she is really bad off, we let her rest on our dog beds before going out, and then again when coming in since she doesn't have the energy to make it back to her bed sometimes like when she had food poisoning.

    1. Oh, poor mom. That's bad when you have to rest on the dog bed and can't even make it to your own bed!

  15. I hope you're feeling better! I was sick a few weeks ago and Leroy could care less, he actually sat in front of me and barked for 30 minutes. Sherman will walk by and check on me every once in awhile to make sure I'm still breathing ;)

    1. That's so funny about Leroy and Sherman's different reactions. Rita does that fly-by "are you still alive" thing too?

  16. Well, we are sorry to hear that you've had a bad cold, and know that is no fun, especially when your dog still expects things. You probably know that mom had major back surgery awhile back, after coming home after 10 days in the hospital I was not very understanding why she couldn't take me for walks or play with me. But now, every afternoon I look forward to our lie down on the couch where I snuggle along side her while she rests. Love Dolly

  17. Thank the Doodle I've never been sick around Jaxson yet. Don't think I could survive LOL Harley is very clingy - he cuddles and never leaves my side. So sorry you're under the weather, hope you get well soon.

    1. Hope you make it through the winter with no colds! Jaxson does seem like at this point he might not have much patience for that! :)

  20. Hahaha!! Sorry you are ill, but that IS hilarious!! When I am sick (it's the human here) Austin is so lacking in the milk of kitty kindness he moves out for the duration, trying to find another sucker to feed him and give him germ free scritches I guess! ;)

  23. Sorry you are not feeling well. After I came home from the hospital in July, Freighter was probably the most relieved to see me (which was a surprise because he is fairly independent). I have had zero time to get to Walmart to look for your book, but if I get there this weekend I will remember to look!
