Mischief at the Office

Friday, June 26 is Take Your Dog to Work Day

Luckily, I've been working from home since 2000. For a long time I worked as a research analyst, and now as a writer. Our girls - angel Bailey, angel Abby, and Rita - have all enjoyed getting to "go to work" with me every day, even if my commute is just to the office down the hall.

We did try taking Bailey to the dog-daddy's work a couple of times -- but only on the weekends when very few other folks were around.

Good thing too, because the very first time we took her there (the hubs just needed to quickly stop by the office for some files), she sensed immediately that this was some sort of enchanted land. As soon as we opened the door, she took off running. We had her off-leash, assuming she'd just cruise along with us - but no. She had other plans!
Angel Bailey

As the hubs went to his office, I raced after her as she zig-zagged through the cube-maze. It was like she was searching for something as she dashed and darted from cube to cube.
I lost track of her at one point and ran past an office with a lone, stressed employee working on that lovely Saturday afternoon. He had a bewildered look on his face.

"Did a beagle cruise by here?" I asked, although I didn't really need to.

"Yeah," he said. "She flew in here, looked around and took off. She went that away..." He pointed down the hall.

I finally found her with her head in someone's wastepaper basket. She'd found her prize.

Apparently there had been a birthday celebration the day before, and someone had thrown away part of a piece of cake. (Who throws away cake??)

Every time we took her along to the office after that, she would race around, certain there was cake - or some other treasure - hidden in that wonderland!

So, will you be taking your dog to work on Friday? If you do, and if it's a beagle... I'd suggest a leash at all times!

Thanks to Snoopy’s Dog Blog, Alfie’s Blog, and My Brown Newfies for hosting Monday Mischief!

  1. Katie used to go to work every day from the time she was 9 weeks old until she was five. She loved it. I went for about two months and then was fired for being a nuisance! Now Mom mostly works from home, so we are at work already, but occasionally when she does go into the office she takes one of us with her. We find it rather boring after a short time.

    1. It is mostly pretty boring at an office! I agree, Emma!

  2. I'd love to be able to take my dogs to work, but unfortunately it's against the policy of the office building. I can just picture you trying to find a speeding beagle in a cubicle maze - too funny!

  3. Hilarious! My dogs are at work with me all day every day! And I cater to their whims and needs. I'm kinda glad none of them are beagles, or I'd be up and down more than I already am. :)

    1. They'd definitely be trying to get you to open a bag of treats about every 5 minutes. Beagles. Gotta love the little chow hounds!

  5. I would do exactly the same thing, smell that food as soon as I walked through the door. Oh, I'll be under my mom's feet, I mean desk, so technically I'm already there. Love Dolly

    1. Yes, it's nice to be at home with the pups. For a while we both worked at an office and it was stressful knowing Bailey was trapped at home alone all day. Much happier with our setup now!

  8. Yes, let Bailey eat cake, lol! I wish I could have taken Haley to work with me when I worked in an office; it would have been so fun having her there for the day.

    1. Of course it takes both a certain type of dog and certain type of job to be able to work out well. If I had an office job Rita would bark at everyone who walked into my office. :)

  10. Well, yes and no! No, dogs are not welcome in the highrise where my cube is. However, my company grants everyone a work-from-home day each week and my day is on Fridays. So, on Take Your Dog to Work day, I will be with my dogs while working from home! Yay!

  11. I work from home too, but occasionally I will pick up or deliver something at an outside office and will take a dog or two with me. They have to make sure they introduce themselves to everyone there, so we a total but welcome disruption. No work happens until we leave.

  14. Bailey was so cute! What a hilarious story! :D I haven't found a job yet so I will be home on take your dog to work day. We've taken the girls to my husband's work, he's a mechanic and they enjoy laying around in the show room. It's funny because if I walk them past any shops they hear the mechanics working and the rrrrRRRRrrrr of the tools and they look for my husband!

    1. That's funny that when they hear mechanic-y noises they look for daddy. :)

  17. I can't unfortunately. HR cites allergies and building policies (some other companies in the building bring dogs so I don't know what's up with that). Although this Friday, the bf is getting his wisdom tooth taken out so I'm working from home!

  22. LOL that is funny. At the judge's education seminar we attended on Sunday someone left a bag of cookies open on a chair. Golden Boy Thunder found them and helped himself. I bet cake would have been a better find!

    1. Lol. Good boy, Thunder! Bailey would have been proud! Bailey was not above sticking her head into any bag left anywhere!!

  23. LOL oh heavens no! Sampson is wonderful, he just wants to meet everyone and get lovies, but Delilah, she goes snooping like Bailey did. She will hit every single garbage can and once she came up with an ant trap. No, IF I bring the dogs to work, I need to sequester them in my area. And really, WHO does throw away cake?

    1. An ant trap?! Oh, egad. (Seriously... I would NEVER throw away cake. Luckily it wasn't chocolate. Probably no one throws away *chocolate* cake.)

  24. Cricket used to go to work with me when she was a puppy, but she was always in a crate. Hmmm...I'm thinking I might take someone to work with me on Friday (if I don't forget)! My boss isn't a big dog person, but I can also pretty much do what I want (because I count his money, and you don't want to piss off the person handling your money...LOL).

  25. Love the mug shot. And leave it to Bailey to hunt down the snacks. Frankly, I don't think I want to know a person who throws away cake. That is just so wrong.
