An Experiment Goes As Expected

Last week, Jodi at Heart Like a Dog, who frequently writes cute posts about the funny or sweet things her dogs do that make her smile, wrote about how her boy Sampson stops eating his Kong and stares at it, "knowing someone will help [him] get the goodies out..."

She said that he will "either bounce the Kong until he gets the pineapple out, or he just stops all together. "

I commented that "Rita would look at me like I was insane if I put fruit in her Kong." Jodi asked if I'd ever tried pineapple, conjecturing that Rita might actually like it. I said I was "100% certain Rita will give me a look of disgust if I offer her a piece of pineapple." And an experiment was born.
I had some frozen pineapple in the freezer, so offered her a chunk, which she sniffed at.
Then she closed her eyes so as to truly assess the smell.

Then she stuck her tongue out at me...
...And turned away in disgust.

I'm pretty sure there's not a single fruit this girl will eat, and only a few veggies. (Her favorite is sweet potato.)

What about you pet? Does he/she like to eat fruits and veggies?

    1. I wish Rita would eat a banana. She likes sweet things, so I don't understand why she doesn't like fruit!

  2. LOL Rosie will eat just about anything and both she and Rudy like fruit. Then there's Jeffie who does not like fruit and isn't keen on veggies either. Jeffie is just hoping Rita doesn't eat carrots... ick! carrots! But he says if she likes watermelon, that's okay :-)

    1. No, Rita doesn't like carrots either! She agrees with Jeffie - ick on the carrots! (The only way she will eat one is if it's cooked and mixed in with her food.) I can't get her to eat watermelon either though. She's a goof.

  3. We haven't tried pineapple. The dogs differ in what they will and won't eat, with Patches coming in at eating nearly everything.

    1. I'm kind of glad Rita isn't a "eat everything" dog. It makes it easy when you drop stuff or leave it sitting on the coffee table. :)

  4. LOL, she was not impressed. These two like fruit and veggies. Apples, carrots, lettuce stalk.

  5. Not much my guys won't eat.....citrus fruit, that's about it. They like pineapple, blueberries, adore papaya, and of course the whole stew of stuff that goes in a smoothie. Brocolli and asparagus, too!

    1. Funny that they eat everything else but citrus. We had a beagle who would drool like crazy when we'd eat oranges. As for smoothies, Rita hates them, which makes me sad cuz Bailey and Abby both LOVED smoothies!

  6. We've never tried pineapple but I have a feeling Leroy would eat it and think about it later. Sherman would refuse it just like Rita!

    1. Lol. My bro had a golden who was one of those "eat it and think about it later" dogs. She would eat anything you handed her. Anything!

  8. Misty will eat anything I feed her except lemons and green olives. The rest of the dogs will eat anything Misty eats. Before I got her, she was fed a lot of people food and developed quite a discriminating palette.

    1. Does that mean she will eat a black olive? Wow, even our beagle who ate almost everything wouldn't eat a black olive!

  9. That is so funny! My girls recently decided they like bananas. Previously, they would never eat any fruits!

    1. Oh, well, maybe it's not too late for Rita then. Maybe she'll mature in her tastes and start to like bananas too!

  10. since we discovered many food allergies and Cole must have the icky allergy food, he likes lots of items previously gross. Bet Rita would like cranberries. Cole loves, and I mean, loves dried cranberries and blueberries. They are a treat to him. My lab surprised us one Christmas by wanting the fresh sour cranberries, and she gobbled them down. Try Trader Joe's dried blueberries and be surprised.

    1. I don't think she'll eat a dried blueberry, but we'll see... I put dried cranberries in the granola I make, so I already know she doesn't like those. I might have some Trader Joe's dried blueberries. Will see and check that out.

  11. Ha ha, I got the same reaction trying to feed Cricket a strawberry yesterday! I also read Jodi's post, and I have a fresh pineapple in the fridge now, waiting to be sampled. I am pretty sure Luke is the only one that will eat it. He'll eat just about any fruit/veggie, but not the girls. Sheba really likes cantaloupe but that's about it.

  12. I gave Mabel a blueberry today, thinking she would gulp it down. But no she spit it out - twice, then finally ate it

    1. Rita does that sometimes too. She'll spit something out, but if I offer it to her again (and again) she'll finally, grudgingly, eat it!

  13. Hi Y'all!

Let me preface this comment by saying, I'm a retriever. That said, there isn't anything that my Humans eat that I won't and any fruit is a special treat.

    1. That's so funny. I don't think I've tried a pear with her. I'm assuming it will get the same reaction as the pineapple!

  16. I was the same way with watermelon the other day, but then when it was in the treats I was making, it was really good and I ate it. Maybe in the Kong along with something else she would at least try it? I'm picky myself, so I understand.

  18. Aw, thanks for humoring me! You just never know. Sampson will not eat fresh bananas, BUT when I coat them in carob and freeze them, he can't get enough.

Thanks for the shout out, sorry your girl won't eat pineapple.
