Blog the Change for Animals: Take a Chance on the Best Friend You'll Ever Have!

The shelter where I volunteer, Helen Woodward Animal Center, has a pretty good turnover rate for the dogs. But, once in a while, we'll get a dog or two that are there for months on end. I know those dogs gets lots of good care and loving from the staff and all of us volunteers... but still... it would be nice if someone would take a chance on them.

So today, for Blog the Change for Animals, in honor of one of the dogs that's been at Helen Woodward for a while now, Lilo, -- as well as all the shelter pups out there -- I present: "Take a Chance on Me," with lyrics appropriate for a pup waiting for their furever buddy, set to the tune of Abba's classic hit:

"Take A Chance On Me"
If you need a pet, I'm an awesome bet!
Buddy, I'm still free**
Take a chance on me!

If you need me, let me know - I can be your hound!
I can make you laugh ya' know, when you're feeling down!

If you're all alone and you need a dog to own,
Buddy, I'm still free**
Take a chance on me!
Gonna do my very best and it ain't no lie
Put me to a training test; won't you let me try?

Take a chance on me
(That's all I ask of you, buddy)
Take a chance on me

We can go hiking, we can go walking, as long as we're together
Cuddle on the sofa, maybe do some snacking, get to know you better.
'Cuz you know I've got
So much that I wanna do, when I dream I'm at home with you
It's magic!
You ask me to pee outside; and then we'll go for a ride...
Oh, I hope you know
How I'd love you so!!

If you need a pet, I'm an awesome bet!
Buddy, I'm still free**
Take a chance on me!

** Free as in available, not as in "no cost." But I'm still a screamin' deal! My cost includes my shots, microchip, and spay/neuter!

My second novel, Rescue Me, Maybe, is on sale all this week for only 99 cents for the e-book. It's a "who rescued whom" tale based on the story of our dog, Abby, that we rescued from Helen Woodward in 2009. It's available for Amazon Kindle or B&N Nook, or you can download a free Kindle app and read it on your laptop.

It's a testament to how much a rescue pup can change your life!

ALSO... Don't forget - the next Give Cancer the Paw hop is coming on February 6th. Hope you'll join Pooch Smooches and Peggy's Pet Place for the hop!

    1. Personally I was never a big Abba fan, but the hubs is a closet dance music lover. He loves him some Abba. :)

  5. Ear worm! Love your lyrics and your focus for today's hop. Did you happen to see the animal shelter video (a shelter in NC - maybe Winston Salem?) that used this song for a high energy pet promotion video on youtube? Abba made them pull the song from the video :-(

    1. Oh, boo Abba! I would have thought a non-profit could use the song. They're clearly not trying to make money off it. What a bummer. Hope they don't come after me for having "Lilo" sing a few bars!

  6. Ah, poor Lilo, she must be suffering from Black Dog syndrome. I hope someone takes her home soon!

    1. Yes, I think she is. Also, she's one of the older dogs there. And we've had a lot of cute puppies lately. Tough competition!

    1. Me too. She's so funny - she LOVES to roll in the grass - then comes over to you all covered in the dry grass clippings for some butt scritching. She likes the simple things!

  11. Ear worm here but in a good way.

You might rig a means of playing your very clever lyrics whenever adopters walk by the kennel of the dogs who are being overlooked. I think you may just have the next big marketing ploy for dogs.

    1. Maybe I'll see if the shelter will go for that. If it's any consolation, I totally have the ear worm as well. Plus I had it all day yesterday while working out the lyrics!

  13. That was great! I wondered at first why there wasn't a video of someone singing that song....I should have known you'd come through! I hope Lilo finds a happy home soon.

  14. I'm pleased to say that the dog Mom adopted from the shelter was a 100 lb adult black dog that had been in the shelter for a couple months. Trine is a dog she still talks about all the time, a great dog! So, yes, take a chance!

  15. You know, if you recorded that song, it would make a great soundtrack for adoption dog videos! ;)

  16. Always have to appreciate a well-written and positive adoption message. No matter how many times it is said, so many people still have this notion that all dogs in rescue are somehow damaged or hard to live with. We all know this is not the case but conveying it in a fun and attractive way is a challenge. Thank you so much for participating!
