Monday Mischief: Apparently Beggars CAN Be Choosers

The hubs took a day off in December, and we took Rita for a hike. Afterwards for a treat, we went to lunch at a local small chain called Bite of Boston for lobster rolls. (We had one of those Groupon type coupons, so they were not only delicious, they were a deal! I love a bargain!)

We decided to share a bite with Rita...
The beggar in question
... And she ate the roll, but spit out the lobster! Shall we zoom in?
The offending bit of lobster

So, apparently beggars can be choosers. My theory is that since she was found on the beach in Rosarito, Mexico (an area known for it's delicious lobster), she probably was surviving on the stuff. Maybe for her, lobster is a reminder of the "bad old days" living on the streets??

Oh well, whatever the reason, next time there will be no sharing, and more lobster for us!

Does your dog ever refuse to eat things you think they'll love?

Thanks to Snoopy’s Dog Blog, Alfie’s Blog, and My Brown Newfies for hosting Monday Mischief!

  1. It has happened in the past with one thing. Nobody touched it if even the dog wouldn't eat it. :P

    1. :) Yeah, if the DOG won't even eat it, how bad must it be??

  2. Gosh I 'd have gobbled in down no problem. Different stokes for different folks. Have a marvellous Monday.

  3. You must have forgotten to provide her with the appropriate butter sauce. BOL.

    1. For sure - the girl loves butter! (She'll eat popcorn - but only if we give her a sufficiently buttered piece.)

  4. That reminds me of the Tom Hanks movie Castaway, when they throw him his "welcome back to civilization" party, and the food is a huge pile of seafood! The only thing he had to eat for the 4 years on the island! LOL!

There are few things my dogs won't eat.....lettuce would be spit out, as would a bite of orange.

    1. I remember that scene! Our beagle was the same - lettuce, oranges, and black olives were pretty much all she wouldn't eat!

  5. LOL Who spits out lobster? You can't say Rita has expensive tastes. :)

  6. Maybe Rita is more of a crab cake girl? :)

    1. I bet Rita would love a crab cake! She did enjoy licking the cup the hubs' lobster bisque came in!

  7. Silly Rita! I'm not a fan of lobster either. Is she a picky eater otherwise? Kelly is picky, but Ike will eat anything including lettuce, banana peels, I don't know, you name it and he'll eat it.

  8. Picky eater. LOL These guys won't eat lettuce. It's the only thing we have to pick up off the kitchen floor if dropped.

    1. I wish she was like that! But no... I'm constantly picking things up off the kitchen floor.

  10. UMMMMM....I don't think there is anything I won't try. I mostly loves fruit and frozen green beans, BUT Gussie and Mags, will only eat theirs dog food, and cooked chicken and treats, no veggies or fruits, which is great cos that leaves it all for me. Give Rita a hug from one little rescue to another.

    1. Aww, yes, I will give her a hug from you Stella Rose! Gussie and Mags sound like they have the same pickiness that Rita does.

  11. There are few odd things I will not eat but I am pretty sure I would have eaten that lobster and then begged for more! BOL

  12. She spit out the lobster?!? Say it ain't so! Mine rarely spit out anything. They don't refuse to bark at anything, either. :(

    1. Rita spits stuff out all the time! Even some of her crunchy treats. (She prefers the meaty treats!)

  13. At one time I heard that lobster was considered lowlife food, eaten only by those who would catch them as cheap food. Sort of like we consider crawdads and possum today. Then someone with money actually tasted one and the demand started.

My dogs are hilarious when i give them a green olive. They treat it like a little green soccer ball.

    1. Oh, that's interesting. Egad - I hope possum never becomes a high-end food!

  14. LOL NOPE. Delilah will eat anything. Anything. Sampson is more picky but then he has never known hardship, he's always been taken care of.

How many dogs do you suppose live on lobster?

    1. I'm glad to hear we are not alone, living with a crazy, picky eater!

  16. I can be really picky. My sisters eat almost anything, but if it is something new, I have to check it out and be quite suspicious. Sometimes I won't eat it and just guard it instead.

    1. Rita is the same! Anything new that I try to give her, she checks it out very suspiciously - like she doesn't trust me! She's such a goof.

  17. Good girl, Rita!! No wonder you and I are so simpatico -- I am not a lobster fan either.

  18. I'm sorry. You took a picture of the lobster on the ground instead of snarfing it up yourself?

I don't know who's more crazy, you or Rita. :)

  19. Maybe she just didn't like the texture. I had a Border Collie growing up on the farm, and once a week or so, we fed him a fresh egg. Being young, my sister wasn't great at cracking the egg in his bowl and not getting a little shell in there. That dog could lick the bowl completely clean and leave the egg shell!

    1. I think it wasn't buttery enough for her. They make their lobster rolls very light on the butter/mayo (or whatever it is) - which is EXACTLY how I like them. But not how Rita likes them I guess!

Funny about the egg shell. :)

  20. Maybe she was used to the really good stuff so she didn't want this non gourmet lobster? Whatever the case, more lobster for you! :D

  21. No lobster? I'm not a fan for seafood myself, but would imagine Rita would have loved it! Shiner loves everything when I expect her to lol. I thought she'd like blueberries, but she didn't. Although that's not too surprising I suppose!

    1. She loves other kinds of seafood. Like she will beg like crazy when we get sushi. (which I find odd). And she LOVES cooked salmon and tuna... but just not a fan of the lobster!

Rita would never eat a blueberry. Unless it was rolled in butter or cheese.

  22. My dogs only refuse food of the fruit/vegetable variety. Then again, I've never offered them lobster, so who knows? I'm allergic to shellfish, so we don't have it in the house. But they love other fish....they are crazier than the cats for tuna!

  23. Jeffie was so glad to see this! Not only is Rita a cheap date (Jeffie's allowance is pretty slim), but he's very picky, too. He carefully sniffs offerings to see if he really wants to eat them. And buttered popcorn is the only way to go! On the other hand, Rudy and Rosie think they'd like to hang out with Rita and snarf up all her rejects! They LOVE lobster!

  24. For some reason my Mum thinks I like green vegetables! If I'm silly enough to put them in my mouth I spit them out pretty soon afterwards!

    I hope you're having a fun day,

    Your pal Snoopy :)
