I Don't Wanna Walk! (And a Winner!)

Rita can be so weird sometimes.

Like, today, it started with making waffles for breakfast, and she wouldn't take the bite I offered her. (She's super picky. What a nut.)

Then I attempted to take her for a walk, and she insisted on dragging me back home after only 5 minutes. This from a girl who normally LOVES her walks.
Rita in her usual walk-loving-mode
I don't understand the waffle thing, but the only thing I can figure about the walk is that she didn't want to go without Daddy. Daddy had another knee procedure done (remember last year when he had both knees done at once?? Well, this time it was just the one, and hopefully this fixes up that pesky meniscus for good. Fingers crossed!!). Anyway, he couldn't join us on our usual long Sunday walk today.

Of course, later she regretted her decision and laid by the front door. But by then it was too hot to go for a long walk. What a goofball.

Except if they weren't feeling well, has your dog ever dragged you back home and not wanted to go walking??

In Non-Mischief News...
We have a winner!

Last Monday for Rita's 3rd birthday, I announced a giveaway of a 1lb bag of Mini Zukes, a picture frame, and the winner's choice of a signed copy of either What the Dog Ate or Rescue Me, Maybe!

Drum roll please... The winner, as determined by Random.org and comment number, is....... "Houndstooth" from the fabulous Tales and Tails blog. Congratulations! I'll be in touch to see which book you'd like and to get your mailing addresss!

Thanks to Snoopy’s Dog Blog, Alfie’s Blog, and My Brown Newfies for hosting Monday Mischief!

  1. Oh Rita!
Alma loves all walks all the time, but sometimes Moses isn't a fan. He passively protests, dragging along slowly (especially if he thinks it's too hot out), and then all of a sudden seems happy when he knows were turning towards home again.

    1. Rita is almost always happy to turn toward home - cuz she gets a treat at the end of each walk. (So spoiled, i know...) She practically races home the last 2 blocks.

  2. My sister Katie was always a lover of walks, but now that she has her arthritis she often stops walking and just wants to go home. She always did that when she was younger and someone other than Mom was walking her. She only wants to walk with Mom.

    1. Oh, what a Momma's Girl! Sorry to hear about her arthritis. That's no fun. Poor sweet girl!

  3. We love walks too, but sometimes we have other things on our minds.

    1. You pups... you have a lot to think about sometimes!

  4. It sounds as if Rita may be trying to exert her authority as pack leader or at least question her position in the pack. This is common among dogs I've had. One trainer told me never to let a dog make pack decisions or I would lose control. I could never take that seriously. One advantage of having multiple dogs is that they can never quite agree. :-)

    1. Maybe I need multiple dogs... It would at least encourage her to eat, I think! (She's never picky when her 'cousin' Reggie is around!)

  5. Roxy can be like that. Butt planted, no walking, that's it. Torrey, will walk anywhere, anytime.

    1. Our beagle would do the same - she could turn into a 100lb boulder. But it was mostly if you wanted to go a way she didn't want to go, not that she necessarily wanted to go home.

  6. I've never had them turn around as soon as we'd left, but typically they do lead the walk so we go home when they head that way.

Congrats to Houndstooth, she's going to love which ever book she chooses!!

  7. Bentley and Pierre never turn down a walk, but if it's extremely hot (always) Bentley will stop and rest. Congratulations to Houndstooth! I hope that the procedure works well on your husband's knee. Been there, done that...still have problems. ☺

    1. Oh, sorry to hear you are still having knee problems. That's no good... So many folks say meniscus surgery fixed them right up - it's too bad you and the hubs are not in the group!

  8. Wilson has an opinion about his walk almost every single day.....No! I don't want to go that way! ....No, it's too hot, let's go back!.... No, unless you bribe me with a cookie, I'm not even getting off the couch!...He has a million excuses! He plants his feet and lowers his head to pull back on the leash. I even did a WW on it:

    1. Heehee - willful Wilson reminds me of our beagle. It wasn't that she didn't want to walk, but she wanted to go the way SHE wanted to go, and if you didn't want to go that way, well, she'd just plant her butt and not budge. She would rather go back home than go walk the way she didn't want to go. Stubborn!

  9. Nope. If that ever happened, we would be going to the vet or something. He usually protests when he feels like his walks are too short.

    1. Luckily I know she's weird, so I knew a visit to the vet wasn't needed!

  10. Congrats to Houndstooth! And Jeffie cannot believe Rita turned down some waffle! He agrees things should be sniffed and examined, but waffle?!

  11. Mike tried to take Honey for a walk Saturday while I was setting up our porch sale. They got about ten steps away from the house before Honey pulled him back home.

Luckily Ithaca summer days top out in the 70s with low humidity so we just waited until we were all ready to go together.

As for giving up the waffle bit, Honey has no idea what Rita was thinking. :)

    1. Funny. That reminds me - I think Rita did the same thing once when the Daddy tried to take her on a walk alone and I was just pooped and wanted to stay home. They were back home very shortly!

Your summers sound lovely and I'm very jealous!

  12. *squeeeee* I'm so excited that we won! That is just awesome sauce!

And yes, we've had dogs who would drag us back home on walks. One was Hawk, who was convinced that the sky was falling at any minute and would get him if we were walking in town. If we left home and walked somewhere else, it was all good. Blueberry just hated being outside. I have no explanation as to why, but she was not a fan of walking and she let it be known.

    1. Hooray! I'm excited that you're excited!

And funny about Blueberry. Pups sure know their own minds, eh?

  13. I know the heat has effected my dogs appetite. They are eating less right now because of it. Prince is not in as big a hurry for a walk right now but Nadie would go no matter what the temperature. Neither of them want a walk in the rain. If it rains, they will run out to do power business and want right back in. I think they are afraid of melting or something.

    1. Rita's just a fuss budget as far as the food goes. She's SO picky. Rita will actually go out in the rain, as long as it's not too hard. She doesn't mind getting wet, and I think she prefers it to being too hot!

  14. Maggie can be very particular about her walks...sometimes she'll go sometimes she won't...so I just let her out and if she's not with us by the time we hit the gate, the gate gets closed and she stays home. Congrats To the winner!

    1. Funny, isn't it, how some dogs just aren't that into walks, and other dogs get SO excited. Amazing how they each have such distinct personalities.

  15. What a goof ball indeed. Don't think mine ever dragged me back. I had a horse that would race back home and did so one day and threw me off to break my tooth and wrist but not a dog. Congrats to the winner. I like how you put a picture of the random org winner up there, I will have to do that next time.

  16. Sheba can be picky about treats, and sometimes refuses them for no apparent reason. I don't think I've had any refuse to go for a walk though. Kobi did refuse in the snow once, but we turned around and went a different route where there was less snow and he was fine! He was older then so I was happy he let me know he wasn't up for walking in the deeper snow.

  17. Congrats to the winner. Yes my dogs have not wanted to walk with just me, except for Freighter. He is happy with the walks I take him on. :)
