The Worst (or Best??) Kinda Mischief...Puppy Mischief!

Today, we have a guest blogger! Since Reggie's always such a hit - and some even suggested we should highlight him every day (a suggestion which made Rita sulk for a while...) - well, we decided you should see more than just his unbelievably cute side. So, my sis is taking over today to reveal some Reggie-mischief! Take it away, Terry...

Happy Monday! Just stopping by Pooch Smooches as guest blogger. I am Jackie’s sister, Terry, and the lucky woman who owns and loves Reginald H. Dickenson, a.k.a. Reggie. I am just tickled that so many of you seem to appreciate the little devil. Because at times he can be a devil, and because Rita is almost always an angel, we are taking over Monday Mischief this week.

Rita has been so great teaching Reggie the joys of play dates. She’s got just the right blend of sweet and tough. He loves her! She does me the kind favor of leaving behind one of my favorite things – a totally exhausted pup. After their last session, this is how they settled in on our front porch. Cute, eh? (Please note Reggie’s ears standing up so nicely.  We will re-visit that later in this post.)

Reggie is 5 months old and is a good (most-of-the-time), smart puppy.  At the “root” of mischief these days is teething, and the resulting need to have everything in his mouth. As his baby teeth have dropped, we’ve offered plenty of "acceptable things to chew.” Witness this lovely display he so nicely arranged in one of his many containment units we have around the house.

We shop for pet supplies that are labeled “indestructible.” Those silly marketers have obviously not actually lived with a teething puppy.  We bought a Kong brand pad for his crate.  Kong was partially right; he absolutely could not destroy that nice red fabric despite valiant efforts.  But once he figured out how to be an “underdog” in his bed,

...then he also discovered the “soft underbelly” of the Kong enterprise.

When we first brought Reggie home, his ears were so big and heavy we had to tape them in hopes that they would eventually stand up and be proper Corgi ears. This is not a bow!

His ears are mostly up these days, as you can see in that first photo with lovely Rita.  So once we quit taping his ears, we were able to transfer our taping skills to things like this chair pad he tried to devour. Once again, luckily, he went for the underbelly.

Now, let’s move outside, shall we? I love to garden and knew that a pupster could spell trouble, so we put this nice twig fencing in front of all the beds. Kinda pretty, and it worked for a couple of months.

But then Reggie found his inner agility dog, leapt over it, and took it out on his way back out of the beds. He decided it would look better like this:

As Jackie always says, this stuff is the reason they make puppies so cute. It can all be a little crazy-making, unless you just keep repeating the mantra, “Puppies will be puppies. I love puppies.”

Reggie is cute and lovable, and he makes us laugh many times every single day. I leave you with a little sample of how very fun and nutty he can be. We did find one toy for him that is actually indestructible, as advertised. It’s a Tuffy’s Junior Ring Toy, and he loves it. We play fetch with his “donut.” As he brings it back to you in “Blind Pup’s Bluff” fashion, he bumbles into things.

One day he even decided that dunkin’ the donut in his water bowl would be a good finale to the play session.

We did actually graduate from Puppy Class, where Reggie got an “A” in play. Not surprising, with a mentor like Rita. We start obedience class this month. Jackie and I definitely plan to give Reggie and Rita lots of time together, so you will most likely see more of Mr. Reg from time to time here at Pooch Smooches. Hopefully, there will be stories of a gentleman dog who does mostly all the right things. I do think, though, that a tiny bit of mischief in a creature is a delightful thing.

Thanks to Terry for the post, and an extra special thanks to Reggie for getting into the mischief, since Rita's been lagging in the mischief department! Happy Monday Mischief, everyone!

Thanks to Snoopy’s Dog Blog, Alfie’s Blog and My Brown Newfies for hosting the Monday Mischief Blog Hop.

  7. Great post! Reggie wouldn't be a Cardi pup if there wasn't at least some damage, somewhere. Someday I should regale you with all the things destroyed by my first Cardigan, Dylan, back in the days before I knew about crate training!

Look out, though, as Reggie is just now heading into his teens ;-)

    1. Uh-oh. What will a teenager Corgi be like? Lou was 2-1/2 and beyond all of this when we got him. Sometimes I think he would be appalled at the things Reggie does, but then I also wonder -- did he act just like this as a pup? That thought gives me hope!

(I think I did read somewhere way back in your blog that Dylan maybe even chewed on a mattress or something like that?)

  10. My MIL always tapes tampons in her Danes ears when they're clipped, to keep them upright.

Girl, girl, girl ... Reggie needs a couple of Jones center bones! Jampacked Jawzers or Bandit's Bones. And some jerky! Maybe a Crown Knuckle. Keep that boy's mouth busy!

  14. Reggie is just so adorable. It sounds like he is also smart and creative, figuring out how to get to the bottom sides of things to destroy them! I do love the photo of him and Rita, and of course the donut one. Look forward to seeing more of him!

  15. Reggie is cute as a bug, he sounds like my Gambler who is into everything.

  16. Aw he's such a cutie! At least he didn't get the old tampon in the ears thing... I've met some Doberman pups who had tampons taped in their ears so they would stand up properly. I think the blue tape thing looks much cuter ;)

  23. Reggie is such a cutie! I hope you sent that photo of the Kong bed to the company. That is a serious flaw! How silly that they don't make the entire bed out of the tough fabric. You didn't really think Reggie would be thwarted by that twig fencing, did you? LOL!
