Mirth Watch Thursday: Behind the Limerick

In case you missed the wonderful limerick that Oz the Terrier wrote about Rita, here it is:

There once was a Shepherd named Rita
who was mixed with a Beagle, not an Akita.
She can throw a mean punch
and eats dead gophers for lunch
which she chases with a Peach Margarita.

And if you did see it and wonder why I let my dog drink margaritas... let me 'splain.

First of all, she's actually more of a straight-up-tequila girl:

No, really... I decided I should maybe clarify some of the limerick after I got this hysterical comment from Flea:
"Hm. I'm thinking gophers and peach margaritas would be ... *shudder* kinda gross. To each her own. I'd be more inclined to chase a gopher with a gin and tonic. Anything else would be like spraying air freshener at a fish market. At least the gin and tonic is more like using bleach."
As you can glean from this comment, Flea is very funny, so if you aren't already, you should follow her blog.

So, here is the longer story behind the limerick:

1. Rita, as far as we know since we haven't sprung for the DNA test, is a German Shepherd/Beagle mix, which makes her a sheagle, or a beapherd.

2. Rita's best friend is a boxer, Dakota, who has taught Rita how to throw some serious punches. As I told Oz, Rita will give you a quick kiss, then punch you right after.
"That's right girl - you gotta float like a butterfly and sting like a bee!"

3. Rita does in fact like to eat dead gophers for lunch, as I documented here. She also finds them enjoyable as a brunch item. A bedtime snack would also not go amiss, but since we never go to the beach at night, she's outta luck there. [Luckily, there are no dead gopher pics to accompany this item.]

4. As for chasing the gophers with a peach margarita, I told Oz that Rita was named Peaches when we adopted her, and that her daddy makes a mean peach margarita when our tree is overloaded with fruit, so she is kinda half-named Rita after Peach Margarita and half-named Rita for Rosarita Beach in Mexico, where she was found (hugging a bottle of tequila).
Do I look half in the bag in this picture? (I possibly was - the hubs makes strong drinks!)

There you have it - everything you ever wanted to know about Rita's limerick but were afraid to ask. Thanks, Flea, for helping inspire today's post and thanks again to Oz for our Rita's fun limerick. Thanks everyone else for reading!

I've been to Rosarita Beach. Rode a horse at full gallop along the ocean!

    2. We had lobster there too! Or maybe it was down in Ensenada...Cute little place overlooking the ocean. Great lobster and extremely cheap! It was years and years ago....

  3. Hilarious! I read this to my 15 year old who immediately said, "Road trip! California here we come!" He thinks everyone I know online is a potential road trip. Being homeschooled, he's basically correct.

Thanks for clarifying the whole peach margarita thing. I'm a huge margarita fan, but I don't like peaches unless they're fresh. So. When are your peaches ripe? So I can plan my next road trip. ;)

    1. Road trips are awesome! Come on out - late Mayish for the peaches!

We are big fans of margs here too - we make all different kinds. Had them at our wedding even. It's usually Margarita-Friday around here so be sure to plan your road trip to be here on a Friday! :)
