Sometimes I Wish Rita Spoke English!

At least once a week, Rita takes part in this scenario at the beach: A big dog runs up to play, but maybe is a bit too dominant or rough, so Rita gets scared and squeals like the drama queen that she is, when all the big dog wanted to do was play. Invariably, she will later run up and do the exact same thing to a smaller dog. She just wants to play, but she gets so excited that she bops the little dog or chases it too fast, and the next thing you know, she's scared the life out of it and it's telling her off.

Rita flees the big dogs. "Hey! Come back! You said you'd skinny-dip with us!"

I try to explain to her: "Do you remember how that big dog scared you? Well, you just did the same thing to that little dog. Get it?" No, she doesn't get it. If only she spoke English!

On second thought, I'd rather she didn't speak English. I'd hate for her to be blabbing to everyone about what goes on around here. ("You should see my Momma. She sits in front of that computer all day, and she hardly gets out of her PJs! Some days, she doesn't even brush her hair!")

I wish she understood English. Hmmm, maybe she understands Spanish - after all, she's from Mexico. Unfortunately, all I can say to her in Spanish is "Two beers, please" and "Where is the bathroom?" No point asking where the bathroom is, as she'll just point outside, but maybe I can at least train her to fetch beers for the hubs and me!

What would you like to be able to explain to your dog/pet? Leave a comment and let me know.

Book/Writing news
If you are doing a little early Christmas shopping for the dog-loving reader in your life, how about a signed copy of What the Dog Ate? I'm now selling signed copies via Cometdog.com, for the low, low price of $14.95, which includes shipping. (Of course, unsigned copies make great gifts too, and those are available at Amazon, B&N, and CreateSpace.) Ten percent of the profits on all print sales goes to Best Friends Animal Society!

You should check out everything else in the Cometdog shop. Lot of fun stuff. At a minimum, take a peek at the main page to see pics of lots of cute pups (including Rita!) in their bunny ears. Too cute!

Finally, remember last Friday's post when I tagged four authors to post about their latest works in progress? Well, they all played along! You can read their posts at the following links: Samantha Stroh Bailey, Cat Lavoie, Isabella Louise Anderson, and Carol Bryant.

Thanks again to these lovely ladies for participating!

  2. I often wish that Rumbles could speak for just one day. We could laugh about how much crazy fun he had as a pup. He could ask me what happened to Punch...and his leg. He could explain just how bad his arthritis is. He could tell me how worried he used to be when he stayed at the kennel. He could explain why he can't poop just anywhere. He could ask me why in the world we have to have those cats. He could tell me that he loves me as much as I love him.

  3. I, too, would not like Indy blabbing about what goes on around here. If I could explain anything to her it would be, "most other dogs are nice. There's no need to snap and go for the jugular just because one approaches you!" If only she saw every dog like she sees Blackie, her one-and-only-dog-friend.

  4. Awwww! Rocket says he would have saved her from the big dogs! (he's fibbing...he would have run too)

Thanks for the shout out to Cometdog store! I'm no P.T. Barnum.

  5. Thank you so much for tagging me, Jackie! I had a lot of fun with the questions!

Rita is such a cutie!! :)

There are so many things I would like to explain to Abbie the Cat... but #1 on the list would be: You are not an alarm clock and no one likes a paw in the face at 4 in the morning! ;)

  6. If my dogs spoke English...I'm focusing on how much blackmail I would have to spend to keep them quiet.
