Mirth Watch Thursday: You Need A Unique Breed!

Today on Mirth Watch Thursday I'm blogging about unique breeds. Rita is a marvelous mystery mutt... or is she a unique breed? That's right... I give you, the sheagle!

Should we think of mixed breed dogs as "mutts" or "unique breeds"? I've got no problem with the term mutt. It's got a friendly, down-to-earth, happy-go-lucky, Jack(Russel)-of-all-breeds ring to it. But some people think of mutts as "lesser" dogs than pure breds. That's why a shelter in Puerto Rico came up with a special way to identify and "market", if you will, the mixed breed pups at their shelter.

Think "designer dogs"...only no one had a hand in the design. They're like naturally ocurring designer dogs. Organic designer dogs, if you will.

I hope this video brings a you a smile on Mirth Watch Thursday. (I openly admit that I got the idea to use this video off of Flea's Funny Bone Monday post. But it's not really stealing, since I told her outright that I was going to also use it.)

Since Flea does a post full of funny videos every Monday, I'm pretty much thinking these Mirth Watch Thursday posts ought to write themselves from now on!

Hope you are having a mirthful Thursday!

  1. I saw that story about Puerto Rico and thought it was extremely clever. Indy is lab + bad attitude = Labrabad.

  2. I love the idea of orgnic designer breeds. Someone told me just the other day that Roxy is a poma-huahua. A true one of a kind, BOL.

  4. By mixing, you get a unique dog in itself! This was fabulous!

  6. I can totally see the beagle and shep in Rita too. :-) I've seen that video and I think it is a great idea! We're always trying to figure out what our Leah is too. We THINK she is shepherd, Dobe and maybe a little Akita. Whatever's in there, she's definitely a unique looking one...just makes her all the more special!

  7. This is great. My rescued male came labeled as "Shepherd Mix" - he's mostly white with a couple large brindle patches on his body and face. He definitely has Akita in him and I believe a type of hunting hound - he's covered in ticking, has an akita tail, eyes and head shape and a hound greeting howl and hunting instincts. Oh, and a natural mohawk : )

I wouldn't change him for anything but am dying to see what a DNA test says : )

  8. I think Rita's gorgeous(!), and she is definitely her own unique breed. I think that if she were a registered breed, she would be a very popular breed.
What's funny about having a multi-mix is that people so often ask, "What kind of dog is that?" Sometimes they ask because they're just curious, but sometimes it's because they love the way your dog looks and they want one. And you get to say: "Well, too bad! You'll never have a dog like mine!" lol (Okay, I know most of us wouldn't really say that, but it's the truth.)

  9. LOL! I have purebred dogs, and lots of people ask what kind of mutt is that? As in what do I think the breed mix is! With Jimmy, they think Border Collie/Corgi...a pretty good guess. With Wilson, I've gotten pit bull mix, bassett hound/shepherd mix, doxie/shepherd mix...and the list goes on. In recent years, Cardigans have become (unfortunately) more popular, and now more people do know them for what they are.

  10. I love those names, Sheagle and Beapherd! We never really call mixed breeds mutts, we are all just dogs. Sometimes if someone asks what mix I am we will say I am a breed and rattle off the name but we don't run around using the terms purebred or mutt, no need for that.

  12. I was just wondering what Rita's breed was the other day when I saw that video. How funny that you explain it!

  13. shelters need to do whatever they can to help place homeless dogs into forever homes. if it's as easy as renaming a "mutt" to "unique breed" then i'm all for it.
my kibbles was a "mutt" from the shelter. everywhere we went people wanted to know what she was because she was so beautiful. our vet said she was a dachshund mix (possibly with papillon or chihuahua) but whatever she was, she was my "mutt" from the "pound" and i loved her.

  14. Love this! Saw it posted on the University of Florida Canine Cognition and Behavior Lab Facebook page. I had a mixed breed DNA test run on Wrigs some years ago. It came back showing he had a bit of border collie, a bit of Bernese mountain dog, and a LOT of unknown. LOL! There is no dog on the planet of any "breed" that I could love more than Wrigs.

  15. I don't really say "mutt" anymore, but I'll say "mixed breed" a lot. I kind of like "unique breed" though. I think "designer dog" sounds just a little too uppity or something, or like they were intentionally made the way they are...even adding organic doesn't really help, for me. I do like Emma's idea that they're all just dogs!
Rita is definitely a unique dog and I love the way the beagle and shepherd are put together on her! :)
