We're Walking Here... Or Not

As I mentioned last Monday, we're dog-sitting our nephew, Reggie the corgi, at the moment.

Here's a pic of Rita and Reg on our walk the other day. Of a twenty minute walk, about 13 seconds of it looked nice and organized like they are in this photo.

Since I had my hands full, I couldn't get pics of what the rest of the other 19 minutes and 47 seconds of the walk looked like, but here are some diagrams.

As I mentioned last week, Reg doesn't really like to go for walks, so mostly we looked like this:
Rita: "Let's go!!" Reg: "Okay. Let's go home!"

Or sometimes we looked like this, when they'd stop and sniff. Well, Reg likes to stop and sniff. Rita likes to stop and eat grass. (Pretty much every walk she stops to eat grass. Note in this diagram she has me twisted up in her pink leash.)
Rita, part cow, eats grass while Reg sniffs.
Of course sometimes we also ended up looking like this, with me hog-tied in between them.

I know there are leashes you can buy for walking 2 dogs at once, but usually it's not a problem. When Rita goes to Reggie's, both my sis and her hubby are there to walk them, and here, as long as it's the weekend, I can get the hubs to help me. Since Reg is not that crazy about walking anyway, and since they are getting so much exercise just racing around the house together, I've pretty much given up on walking them by myself! So no need for a two-dog leash!

Does (do) your dog(s) ever try to hog-tie you when you go for a walk?

  1. Basically walking our 2 boxers is a 2 person job, unless DH is walking them and he can walk 2 at the same time. He says I am the problem but I disagree. They rarely get tangled as long as we are both there, but Cassius does like to walk in circles around me sometimes.

    1. I never taught Rita to heel to one side - that is mainly because we have no sidewalks in most of our 'hood, and the streets are windy, so I often change sides of the street as we walk to be visible to on-coming cars. I don't like her to be on the 'car side" of me, so she's used to walking on either side. Add another dog to the mix and her changing sides, and I'm hog tied!

  2. LOL Been there and done that (although all our dogs have always loved going for walks.) I use a split lead and have two of them - one for 2 dogs and one for 3 dogs. Saves my sanity and keeps me from falling down! lol

    1. I've only walked 3 dogs a couple of times. That's a challenge! (And I'm a klutz, so it's dangerous!)

  3. Since I am always walking two dogs, yes. Mostly once they go potty we can get going, but until then, Sheesh.

  4. People often ask me if I am a professional dog walker when we are out. There are some things you do for love and some things for money. Walking dogs I will only do for love.

    Love your drawings.

  5. My duo only do this if they're on their extending leads!

    1. We just came back from a walk this morning. It was a little hectic on the way out, but once we turned to head home, they were much more manageable, both charging ahead since they couldn't wait to get home! (Rita so she'd get her post-walk treat and Reg just to get the darn walk over with!)

  6. Cocoa has tripped me more times than I should admit :). I live in the country so not many have seen the hilarity that is me flying while Cocoa tries to chase a deer/dog/cat/leaf!! Keeps us in the moment, right :)

  8. LOL!! I don't think I've ever known a dog that doesn't like walks! I rarely ever walk both my dogs together, it's too much. Individually they walk nicely on leash but together it's a bit of a jumble! I'd do the same thing, as long as they're getting some exercise running around the house hold off on the walking until the hubby returns.

    1. We did venture out again today, but only because I needed to make sure everyone had done their business before I went to the shelter. It went ... Okay. Better than the other times anyway!

  9. Your diagrams are funny! I am so glad I only have to walk B. Although she has tried to trip me with the 20 foot leash, most of the time, if I am alert, that doesn't happen. I keep telling her, if she makes me break my ankle on our hike, it's going to be up to her to drag me back down the trail.

A dog that doesn't like walks...where can I get one of those? I thought they were called cats? ;)

    1. Lol. Yes, it does seem rather catlike.

Today we went right out the front door (we usually go left) cuz I needed to throw something away. Then when we turned and walked past the driveway, Reg turned to head back in. Like "that's enough of that!" Nutty.

  10. I've that happen when it rains. Mr. N is forging ahead and foster pup would be trudging six feet behind me, dragging his heels.

    1. Oh Rita would be dragging her heels too if it rained! She hates the rain!

  11. Now you know why I only walk my dogs one at a time! LOL. I love your diagrams, and they seem quite accurate from my experience. I've never really had a dog that didn't want to walk, however, I've had them wanting to walk at totally different speeds.
Luke is part cow as well, so I know all about the stopping to eat grass. I won't let him anymore (well, I try to get him to stop)...I let him stop to sniff but I tell him he can eat grass at home!

    1. You must get a lot of walks in!

And we don't have any grass at home, so I think that's why she likes it so much when we go out!

  12. LOL! My dogs totally relate to the part cow comment. They are addicted to grass, too! Every once in a while they manage to tie me up but usually it's because they've seen a critter and temporarily lost their minds. We've been working on leash manners for 3 years with the two dogs and Phoenix usually walks on the right side and Zoe on the left. For the most part they stay where they should be. It's hard though at first. If I was just babysitting, like you're doing and they are getting enough exercise running around the house and playing, I'd forget about the walks, too! LOL!

    1. Glad I don't have the only part-cow! Rita's leash manners are fine (well, except when she sees one of the dogs she hates) when she's alone, but with their desire to head different directions it's definitely complicated! If I had 2 dogs like you I'd definitely try to train them to walk on one side or the other!

  13. so funny! We dog sat for two weeks one of Cole's Aussie friends. That dog pulled my arm out of my body. Cole wants to sniff, she wanted to bolt. Each leash in a different hand, they had to stay on their side or I fussed and they learned. Don't upset the momma. Picking up poop was a struggle, then carrying two bags of poop. Of course Cole was very interested in Sydney's business so that took effort. By the end of the two weeks they were great then Sydney's people came home to a well trained girl. LeeAnna

    1. Oh, my gosh, that sounds like when I would walk my beagle and my mom's beagle. One wanted to CHARGE ahead, the other wanted to STOP and sniff. I was constantly standing there with my arms getting longer by the second!

And, yes, picking up 2 dogs' poop and then having to juggle that as well is not easy! I normally carry a water bottle for Rita when we walk, but not when Reg is along! Too complicated! (But luckily we don't walk as far, so she doesn't get as thirsty, when he's along.)

  14. Your drawings were a hoot - looks just like me with my two. They both love walks, but seem to like to walk different speeds - one always wanting to move ahead faster and the other lagging behind to sniff something more thoroughly. Of course when they see a cat or squirrel they both suddenly want to take off in the same direction.

    1. So glad you enjoyed my artistry. :) It's practically like water-skiing when you're walking two and see a cat!

  15. Walking my two corgis means I am non-stop passing the leashes back and forth between my hands to keep the twists out. The boys are constantly crossing back and forth! With a sniff-sniff here and a sniff-sniff there, we are NEVER on a straight path. Oh what a joy it would be to go without leashes!

    1. Lol. Here a sniff, there a sniff, everywhere a sniff sniff! And, yes, I was definitely switching the leashes between hands - not to mention juggling the poo bags as well! I don't know if I could do it on a regular basis! You must be a good juggler! :)

  16. We were all assigned a side to walk on early on and we stick to it. Once and a while we might cross over, but it is an easy fix for Mom. We get tangled when someone comes along and walks one of us as our rules seem to fly out the window.

  17. LOL I have walked two dogs at once. I figured out pretty quickly to keep them on a short leash and at heel or it is a disaster (especially if they are not used to walking together). Could you imagine two strong dogs at the end of their leashes pulling me around like a kite?

  20. HAAhahaha!! Your drawings make me feel so much better about how I walk my dogs! I very rarely walk them together. Make that "never" ha ha. But Charlie himself can tangle me up just like your drawings, with just one leash! LOL!

    1. lol. Yeah, sometimes Rita can get me tangled up on her own too. When you've got a long leash like she does, plus Im juggling her water bottle and poop bag - it's easy to get tangled up!
