Less-Wordy Wednesday: Doggie Street Festival

Last Saturday was the Doggie Street Festival here in San Diego - a BIG adoption event with lots of different rescue groups, vendors, and (for the first time this year) an "author pavilion."

I figured I'd tell you about it mostly in pictures, since it's less-wordy Wednesday!

Here's my spot at the pavilion.
Might as well get the bad news over with first... See that big stack of boxes on the right? It's full of my books. Which all went home with me again. I had HIGH hopes for this event, what with 10K dog lovers all together in one spot! Unfortunately, the set up had the authors in the center, so we saw very little traffic. I sold 4 books (one to my sis, which shouldn't count!), and I think 1 other author sold 4. Some sold a couple; others sold none. I couldn't even give away my free bookmarks, cuz no one walked by. There was tons of traffic around the outer edge of the event, where all the vendors and rescue dogs were, but few folks ventured to our spot. Oh well.

On to the good news...
Part of the good news was that 1 lady who bought my book is in a dog-book club, so I'm hoping they'll select Rescue Me, Maybe to read!

Also on the plus side, I got to meet lots of other really nice authors, including Denise Gruzensky, pictured here with her children's book Not Like the Others: Harley's Story.** I'd already "met" Denise online (she wrote a wonderful review of my books on her blog!) so it was really nice to meet her in person.
Author Denise Gruzensky with her book
And... I got to meet her adorable pup, Shasta! So cute! So mellow! So soft!
Isn't he the cutest?!
Here's a shot of the "dogs of the author pavilion." The bull dog is a surfer! He's featured in the kids' book Dozer Surfs. The Bernese is one of Dozer's surfing pals who dropped by.
Shasta let me rub his tummy. So soft!

In more good news... there were tons of cute, adoptable pups! Here's a small selection:
I'm not sure how many were adopted, but last year it was ~170 dogs!

In a final bit of good news, I got to come home to this adorable face, and I got a lot of sweet kisses at the gate!
Missed you so much, Momma! (But why do you smell like other dogs?)

** Come back Thursday, cuz I'm giving away Denise's book plus one other children's book I got at the event! Full details Thursday!

In Other Wee News...
I found out Rescue Me, Maybe was named to the list of finalists in the Readers' Favorites 2014 contest, in the "fiction - animals" category. The winners will be announced in September. Thanks, Readers' Favorites!!

ALSO, the ebook of Rescue Me, Maybe is on sale right now! A measly 99c! It's available at Amazon, B&N, iTunes and Smashwords!

Don't forget to come back tomorrow for the giveaway!

Happy Wordless Wednesday! Thanks to BlogPaws for hosting!

    1. Yes... it was tempting to bring home one of those cute puppies! But I resisted. Couldn't anyway - had my hands full with all the books I had to lug home.... sigh.

  5. That pen full of sleeping puppies was the cutest thing that day. And when the one got up and just sat on the other one's head. Too cute!

  6. That's too bad about the event...but at least you sold 4 - that's better than none. Congrats on the selection for the Reader's Favorite contest...that's cool.

  7. Aw, shame on the event organizers. They made all those participants miss out on the fun of reading your books. *sigh* I have been full of good intentions to write a review of your books. My Dad had a little wooden circle with " A Round Tuit" written around the edge that he thought was hilarious. I think I need one of those. OK now that I've said it it will be a point of honor to get 'er done. Love the photo of Rita greeting you!
P.S. Thank you for reading my BTC4A post and signing the petition.

  10. What a bummer! I'd have thought this would be a perfect venue for you. Guess the bright side is that you had time to take those great pup pics.

    1. Parts were fun... parts were a bit depressing! Like loading all those books back in the car... Sigh. But still, you know what other opportunities might come from it.

  14. Sorry about that. Did you bring Rita? Maybe you should have walked around and gave out your cards. Hope you said something to the organizers. Lots more events for sure ... Golden Woofs

    1. No, Rita didn't come along. She's too unpredictable in situations like that. I'm really glad I didn't bring her because the other bad thing was that we were right next to the DJ set up and the speakers so it was super LOUD. She would have hated it! I got an apologetic email from the organizers, so some of the other authors must have complained. I'm sure if they try again next year it will be set up differently!

  16. It sounds like a cool event, just not organized the best. Maybe next year they'll set things up a little differently.

  17. That is such a bummer. We were at a Christmas fair that was supposed to be wonderful and we sold one book. Never again!

  18. What adorable puppies! I hope many of them found forever homes. I guess since this was the first year to have an author area, they didn't think about the foot traffic. Congratulations on being a finalist! Woo Hoo!!

  19. It's a shame that not many people ventured your way, but you did get to see some lovely dogs!

  22. That's disappointing, it was such a good idea to have you all there. Hopefully they'll try again next year and set it up better. At least you got to see some cute dogs and meet some fellow authors!

  23. Hi there! This is my first visit to your site. Love the pics of all those adorable adoptable pups! Although your event spot wasn't good, it's great that you met someone from a dog book club. I would love to join a dog book club, I've never heard of that before!
