Wordless Wednesday: Pups and a Pledge

Pups:
First I want to show you some special pups today:
{Wait... we interrupt this post to first apologize if you subscribe via email and get this twice. Somehow this posted with a back-dated timestamp. (?) Had to hunt all over to find it and repost it as today. Sorry for the dupe. Now... here are some pups:}
My mom's angel beagle, Sugar

My sister's angel beagle, Cass (with his wooly likeness)
My other sister's angel golden, Lady

My bro's angel golden, Dannie. (Ok, yes. I put elf hats on dogs.)
Our angel beagle, Bailey

Our angel collie/shep (or whatever??), Abby
These pups all have something in common. Something that's a bummer. These are all family pups that we loved a lot, and they all passed away from cancer. Sadly, I could add a lot of friends' dogs that I've loved to this list as well.

My new book, Rescue Me, Maybe, is about love and loss and hope. (Don't worry - there's funny stuff in there too.) At the beginning of the book, Jane has just lost her beloved beagle to cancer. (Ya' know, some of these dog books like to hit you with the sad dead-dog ending. Not me. I get that dead dog stuff over with at the beginning!) You're welcome.

A Pledge
Because I've known and loved way too many pups that got cancer, and because Jane has also lost her dog to cancer in the book, I'm pledging to donate 10% of the proceeds on the sales of Rescue Me, Maybe for the rest of this year to the Morris Animal Foundation.

In their own words: MAF "invests in science that advances veterinary care for companion animals, horses and wildlife." Their funding "helps more species in more places than that of any other organization in the world."

MAF does tons for cancer research. They've supported 200+ cancer studies related to dogs, cats and horses, with a goal of "helping owners and veterinarians prevent and treat cancer in pets." Here, here!

Finally, Betty White supports MAF, and I adore her. So there's that as well.

I could write a lot more about them, but since it's Wordless (ha!) Wednesday, I'll stop. You can read more about them, via the link above.

Just two more words: Cancer sucks.

Thanks to BlogPaws for sponsoring Wordless Wednesday!

  1. That is a very kind thing to do and donate some proceeds to such a good cause. So sad to loose so many to the awful C. Have a wonderful Wednesday.

  2. first off, thank you for putting the "dead dog stuff" at the beginning. i lost my angel dachshund mix, kibbles, to cancer in 2010, so i know the heartache first hand, and it is devastating :(
secondly, you are a gem for donating a portion of your proceeds to the morris animal foundation.
thirdly, i also adore betty white and the work she does for animals. (& doris day too).
    and lastly, yes, cancer sucks.

    1. I thought folks might appreciate the "dead dog stuff" at the beginning. I am wondering if I can market it that way. "The book where the dog's already dead at the beginning!"

Hugs on the loss of your angel. It is indeed devastating.

      I love Doris Day too!

  3. Love this angelic post and your generosity, Jackie. As I tear up a bit typing, all I can think of is that Tynan would like this... Thanks.

    1. Awww. I would like to think that Abby is flirting shamelessly with Tynan somewhere.

Oh, now I see that you said you would send me an email. I thought you asked me to send you one. Ignore the one I sent you! I'll look forward to your email.

What you are doing is awesome!

    1. We've had a lot of beagles in our family. There was another as well - the one that started it all, Barney. He also had cancer and he probably would have died from it - but he got out one day and was hit by a car. We always joked in my family that he chose to go out running and happy, rather than let the cancer get him!

  7. Yes! You are an amazing person! Happy Wordless Wednesday!

  8. Wow, that's a whole lot of dogs you knew getting cancer! As dogs age, they sure do seem to become very susceptible to cancer. What a great cause you have chosen to support!

    1. Sadly, not all those angels were even old though. :( Mostly they were, but not Abby.

  9. I've been so lucky with all the long lived dogs I've had, none have ever been diagnosed with cancer. I always dreaded hearing the words, "beginning stage" and was so grateful for "benign." Dogs can get cancer at young ages. I have a friend who lost her 3 y/o Beagle. Hopefully with more research we can eliminate it soon.

    1. Yes, we know all too well about the cancer in young age dogs thing... It's awful. And, yes, here's hoping on the research.

  10. What a sweet gesture Jackie, I'm sad that so many of your beloved furry family members had passed from this horrible disease. I sure hope they find a cure soon, better yet a way to prevent it~~

    1. We have come a long way with the disease, but there's still so much left to do. (I should probably post some day about the odd thing we do to try to prevent it... It's not *that*... more... unique I guess.)

  11. So many sweet angel doggies. What a lovely and generous heart you have. Thank you for donating part of your book proceeds to MAF.

  12. Oh dear, all the sweet angel pups. I'm so sorry that so many in your family have had cancer. I knew about Abby, but not that there were so many others with cancer too.
How awesome to make this pledge to such an amazing organization. Love that you're doing this.

  13. Cancer runs rampant in people and animals, doesn't it? Our first dog was taken by it. Stupid cancer. I love your book, btw. Thank you for getting the death out of the way in the beginning. Smack your MIL for me, will ya?

    1. My MILs (I have two) are MUCH different from the MIL in the book! Thank heaven! Mine are nice!

And, yes, cancer is stupid. And unfair!

  14. Mom has lost several beloved dogs and cats to the "C" word too. It is so very sad! That is a great pledge you are making.

    1. So many of us have lost them to cancer. :( I hope that my book will resonate with those folks.

  15. Jackie, it is so wonderful that you are doing that....it makes me teary eyed. I think I know what I might be buying as Christmas gifts for my dog loving friends/family. I first learned of MAF when our Shelby died from lymphoma back in 1999, and our vet made a donation to them in her honor.
I think it's so sad that your family has lost so many dogs to cancer, it really does suck.
On the bright side, I love the elf hat photos....I have some similar ones where my dogs look just as happy as in yours. It looks like your family has a thing for beagles and goldens too!

    1. That's really sweet of your vet to donate to MAF in your dog's name. We first learned of them with our last pup's cancer. We did their canine cancer walk. It was really great.

And, yes, our family used to be chock full of goldens and beagles! But now all we've got is 1/2 of a beagle in Rita!

  16. Cute photos. Nice of you to donate some of your books proceeds to the morris foundation. Can't wait to order mine and read.

  17. So sorry that you've lost so many of your furry angels to cancer. That's awesome of you to pledge to donate to the Morris Foundation. Great way to help other fourleggers.

P.S. I appreciate that you went and got the sad stuff over with in the beginning of the book. Nice touch.

  18. Oh my gosh that list is too long :( That's awesome of you to donate some of the money you make from your book sales.

  19. That's so nice of you to donate part of the proceeds. I was reading a book yesterday where they torture the dog to get information from the owner. I think it needs to come with a warning label!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Yes, that should definitely come with a warning! I have been known to stop reading books where bad things happen to dogs. There was a book a few years back that everyone was raving about - they were saying it was a great book for dog lovers. Well, early on, one character killed a dog - on purpose, not on accident or anything. That was it for me! That's a terrible book for dog-lovers! Geesh!

  20. It's wonderful that you're doing this, Jackie. We, too, have had far too many dogs in our lives who succumbed to cancer. It's encouraging that diagnostics and treatments are constantly improving. If only we could learn how to prevent cancer in the first place. Organizations like Morris Animal Foundation can help make that a reality.

    Susan and Wrigs

P.S. Thanks for your well wishes for Wrigs. He is getting better each day. :-)
