Monday Mischief: Hold On To Your Pups, People!

We love the Tour de France. And we love dogs. But the two don't mix. Folks who go to watch the Tour should hang on tightly to their pups, lest they cause some brief heart-stopping moments like this which happened on Sunday morning during the 2nd stage of racing:
(Not the best quality as I just videoed it as it played on our TV, but you get the idea - and hopefully they won't mind me showing 10 sec of their coverage - it's a PSA after all!)

That little terrier or whatever he is just misses getting trampled by the peloton, and he probably would have brought down a dozen or so riders. Yikes!

Not hanging on to your pup can also actually cause a crash, as happens here, but at least it's not a big pile-up:

According to the commentary, neither dog nor man were hurt. (The dog looks a little sheepish afterwards.)

I've seen worse ones though, where the rider definitely was hurt. And on a recent walk with Rita, we almost saw a schnauzer meet his maker. Some folks were walking on the other side of the street. The dog was on leash, but I guess the dude was too cool to hold the other end, so the leash was dragging along on the ground.

When the dog saw Rita, it started to charge across the street, just as an SUV was coming down the road. I screamed and luckily both dog and woman slammed on the breaks. It was a close call and very scary. Hopefully the dummy learned that it's not really all that cool to let your dog get smushed by an oncoming car - especially not in front of your little boy.

I know I'm "preaching to the choir" here, but let's hang on to our pups, people! This is not the kinda mischief we like!

  1. Agree - I saw that news item and just cringed. I wasn't brave enough to watch though. PSA indeed!

  2. OMG, how would one not have their dog on a leash in such situation!?

  4. Oh, my! That's beyond mischief! (You know, the older I get, the less I understand people... )

  5. Whoa, that is scary! Glad no one was hurt!

  6. Saw that. That little dog (and the man who tried to go out and catch it) were lucky they didn't bring down the entire peloton.

  7. I'm really surprised that that doesn't happen more often. People get careless about keeping their dogs on a tight leash in many situations i've been in. Fortunately there are not as many tragic occurrences as there might be.

  8. Oh my goodness!! Those videos were so scary!! And well done to you saving that dog who ran across the road - I sure hope his owner holds his lead now - you're right, this mischief is just too scary! :)

    Have a fun day,

    Your pal Snoopy :)

  10. In the last video, the dog is acting like nothing happened (maybe hoping no one noticed)! I don't really get the reasoning behind taking a loose dog to watch all those bikes!

  11. Oh my gosh those dogs could have really caused problems and serious injuries...the owners need to be spanked for being so careless

  12. Dogs on the race course make me doubly insane--as a daily bike rider as well as a dog lover. I don't know what's scarier--seeing your dog get hit by someone else or hitting a dog yourself.

  13. It only takes a split second for a tragedy to occur. You got it right - hold on to us pups!

  14. I saw that on the news this morning, and was so relieved that it ended well. Talk about a close call. I can't imagine going to an event like that and not holding on to your dog with a leash! What are people thinking?
Thank goodness the one you witnessed also ended well....and hopefully that idiot learned his lesson. I would hope it only took one close call to wake him up.

  16. You may be preaching to the choir but it needs to be said! Those situations are so scary.

  17. Daddy-dog has been watching the Tour and he told Ma and I all about that little doggie. Yikes! I don't think the Tour de France is anyplace for a small dog.

  18. OMG I can't believe people would take their dogs to a Tour race and not keep their dog on leash. Regardless of how 'good' your dog is, it's a very tempting environment. Thankfully no-one was seriously injured!

  19. That lab definitely moved funny. It may have moved that way before the accident, but I couldn't tell. Scary stuff. Can't imagine allowing my dog to cross in front of that.
