San Diego: Come for the Breweries, Bring Your Dog!

San Diego is well known for its craft breweries - there are well over 100 of them. (141 by this count!) If you like craft beer, this is definitely a mecca you'll want to visit one day.

And the good news is, you can bring your dog! Many of the breweries are dog friendly, and you can find a good list here, and a few additional places on this list here. One brewery we really like that isn't on either of these lists is Duck Foot Brewing.
And I cannot lie!

During our recent kitchen remodel, there was one Saturday where all three of us needed to get out of the house so the painters could spray paint the boxes of all the cabinets (since we were just getting new doors/drawer faces). Duck Foot was the perfect place to spend an afternoon.

Okay, I admit - Rita didn't go with us. Even though Duck Foot is dog friendly, she's not always a friendly dog. There are certain men and dogs that set her off, so luckily we were able to leave her at my sisters house.

We had a really fun afternoon at Duck Foot!

1) They have very tasty beer! I used to think I didn't like beer, but that was back when I'd only tasted the "fizzy yellow" stuff. Going to breweries is fun because you can get a flight of taster sizes. And if I accidentally pick something I don't like, I can always talk the hubs into drinking it for me. :)

2) Not only is Duck Foot's beer tasty - it's gluten free! Since the hubs recently found out he's gluten sensitive, this is important for us!

3) There were cute dogs there! I only got a pic of this one though. There was also a really adorable Aussie shepherd pup - who was the mellowest pup I ever met! But unfortunately I didn't get a decent picture of him.

4) They have word games! I love word games! And the hubs was happy cuz he beat me at Boggle - for probably the first time ever!

Beer + dogs + word games = a very fun afternoon!

Have you been to San Diego? Are you a beer person? What's your poison-of-choice?

  1. That looks like so much fun. I'm glad you guys enjoyed your time out. I like beer, in fact, I used to like it more than any other drink, but that is changing some as I get older. I haven't tried a lot of different kinds and sort of stick to my fave - Corona. That pup is too cute and reminds me of a dog we had when I was a kid - Benji. Except Benji was meaner than mean.

    1. Even if you're not a huge fan of beer, some of the places also have restaurants or fun tours. And with such a huge selection of different beers - and being able to buy it in tiny glasses for just a coupla bucks - you can find new fun things. (That's a bummer that Benji was mean - to you guys, or to strangers??)

    2. Pretty much everyone. It really only happened as he got older. He had allergies bad and was always having to go the vet and I think the combination altered his disposition. He was also a Llaso Apso and I've heard they are temperamental on their best days.

    3. I was just reading somewhere recently (forget where) about how dogs who have chronic allergies or other painful issues can become very crabby, and you might not know the reason why to look at them. Poor guy.

  2. I've been to San Diego twice, but it's been years and years ago now. Not a big fan craft beers. They tend to be too heavy for me. I'm like Barb, give me a Corona (Light in my case) and I'm good. I'm more of a wine drinker.

    1. Did you know that some stouts, like Guinness, are actually "light"? A glass of Guinness is only slightly more calories than a glass of Bud Light. I'm a big fan of the chocolates or coffee-flavored stouts and porters. Yum. Also - you should come back to SD!!

  3. I would love to do a beer tour there. I was like you, not a beer drinker really. Then I started drinking good, grown up beer. Such a difference.

    1. It's amazing what a difference really good beer makes. Even the fizzy yellow stuff - if you drink it really fresh, it even tastes great! (Went on a tour one time and had some Bud that was fresh. It was yum!)

  4. I've visited my cousins in SD many times but not to do beer tours. Must try that but not with four dogs.

    1. Some places are just tasting rooms, but others have actual tours - if you do come here again, I'd really recommend the Stone tour - it's a lot of fun. The people who lead it are always amusing, and it includes beer tastings, and then they have a nice restaurant you can eat in while you sober up. :)

  5. That does sound like fun. I like the places that put the puzzles/games on the table. It helps make for a more interesting experience.

    1. Yeah, definitely more interesting. Better than just sitting there. Or sitting there staring at a TV (unless it's a sports bar, I don't like it when there are TVs in restaurants or bars. Bleh.)

  6. My human "Dad" would love to go to a place like that! And he could take the Basset (Bessie), which means that I could have some dog-free time at the house. The Basset would probably love to sample beers, too! Mew Mew! Purrs...

    1. Did you know they make "beers" for dogs? I'm pretty sure one of the companies that makes one kind is here in SD. :) Bessie could have that while your Dad has the real stuff. :)

  7. That's something I miss in VA - used to go all the time with the human children. Haven't been here in SC yet.

  9. My Dad has been to San Diego a lot and I'm sure he's visited many of the local breweries. Mom is very gluten sensitive so she doesn't drink beer (she doesn't like it enough to drink the gluten free, but has marinated meat in it). Thank goodness chocolate is gluten free (so are Cheetos).

    1. The hubs doesn't eat a lotta chocolate (or Cheetos). He's crazy. The thing he really misses is good pizza!

  10. Bailie and Madison would love to take in a brewery, but Mom doesn't drink, and I wouldn't like the other dogs around. It's great they are so dog friendly.

    1. It is nice - and the hubs loves it whenever he goes to one with his work buddies. He always likes to see/say hi to all the cute dogs.

  11. the only bad thing about reading your posts is I'm not there! What a fun place! I hope our new pup is chill.... great that they allow dogs as they are mostly better behaved than most children in restaurants! (No offense to those with two legged puppies)

    1. Oh, new pup!! That's exciting! (And, yeah.... the pups usually are quieter.) :)

  13. Craft beers are all the rage here we even have neighborhood tours. But mom's not into beer but it's nice they're dog friendly! Now if only the Bourbon Trail was dog friendly...

    1. Oh... Bourbon Trail. Fun. Have you ever tried a bourbon-barrel-aged beer?? They are darn tasty!

  14. That looks like such a fun way to get out of the house for a while! I've never been a huge fan of beer, other than occasionally, but maybe that's because I never tried the good stuff!

    1. You gotta try the good stuff sometime! If you like coffee and/or chocolate, you might like stouts or porters. And if you ever get the chance to try a bourbon-barrel-aged beer.... oh man! Those are the best!

    1. Yes, dog-friendly wineries are fun too. We are not big wine drinkers, but we have gone to one once where Rita came along. It was nice!

  17. I've been down to SD for a San Diego beer tour twice. My wife has probably been a half dozen times. I haven't brought the dogs with us yet. Next time we'll have to check out Duck Foot Brewing.

    2. We're in Orange County so not too far away. Maybe we'll make a trip out this summer to check out Duck Foot.

    3. Oh, yeah - that's not far at all. Definitely worth the trip, and there are a couple of other breweries really close to DF if you want to check out a few.

    1. Your dada is a true wordsmith - looking for words in a boggle game that is long over! lol. That's a bummer that your dada is doing something to help the beer people, but does not get free beer. #injustice!

  19. What a fun place! I love craft beer. I live in the middle of nowhere it seems, but there is an amazing brewery only 10 minutes from me, and their patio is dog friendly. I love when places put out items (word games, trivial pursuit cards, etc) to keep their guests interacting with one another.
