Easy Xmas Craft: Scrabble Tile Ornaments

If you've been a blog reader for a while, you know my sisters and I get together every now and then for what we call "forced crafting." (It's like a forced march - you will participate. And you will enjoy it, dammit.)

You might also remember the last time we did a Scrabble tile craft, it involved dogs (we made pendants for necklaces and earrings):
Remember these guys?

Well, this time it also involved Scrabble tiles and also dogs (in part), but this time we made ornaments:

These were really easy, so here's a quick How To.

1. Round up your supplies. You'll need:
  • Scrabble tiles - you can order them from Amazon, or maybe luck out at yard sales
  • Glue - we used "Tacky Glue"
  • Heavy paper - we used paper plates
  • Pretty paper - we used scrapbook paper
  • Ribbon or twine for hangers
  • "Embellishments"- I had some little bags of "holiday trim" I'd bought at Michael's ages ago, and my sis had some cute silver dog paws. We also used "Snow-Tex" (below).

2. Lay your word/phrase out on the heavy paper, trace around it, and then cut it out somewhat smaller to use as a backing.

3. Glue the tiles to the backing. (After gluing down the first tile, you can also put a small drop of glue on the edge of the next tile, so it butts up against the first one nice and tight.)

4. Once dry, cut a loop of ribbon/twine and glue it down on the back of the ornament-in-progress.

5. For something like the LET IT SNOW ornament, lay the ornament down on your "good" paper and trace it. Cut just a hair inside of that, so it won't show from the front. Glue it to the back so it covers the ends of the ribbon, and so the ornament looks nice from either side.
"LET IT SNOW" from the back

For the dog-name ornaments, use a ruler to measure how wide/long you want your backing paper to be, and cut that out. For these, you want the paper to show around the edge.

6. Glue on any embellishments / add "snow"
For Rita's ornament, I just glued the dog paw right on to the good paper, and used the loop to run ribbon through to make the hanger. I tied the little pine cone on with the same ribbon.

For snow, we used "Snow-Tex", which my sis found at Michael's. I just globbed it on the top edges of the tiles using a toothpick.

That's it! Easy-peasy.

  1. Cute craft idea! I always love when I can find a craft project easy enough for my skill level. And personalized ornaments always make a great gift too!

  2. Those are really cute! I don't have the patience for crafty things. Too much nervous energy to focus as needed! I've been saving wine bottle corks to make one of those wreaths from them. The bag full of them is HUGE so I have plenty, but still no wreath! Eventually, I will throw them away! LOL!

    1. Oh, I tried to start saving corks once for one of those cork note boards, but we don't drink enough wine, so I gave up!

  3. Those are absolutely adorable. And I LOVE the idea of forced crafts. I used to do a lot of crafting but mostly I save my spare time for reading now. I will have to seriously consider these because I would love to have an ornament like that for Booker T and Cassius.

  6. Gosh, those doggie ones from before are SO adorable! I am not very "crafty" so I am profoundly jealous of anyone who can do stuff like this!

    1. Those doggy pendants were a lot of fun. I made 4 more of those while we were working on the ornaments. They're fun.

  11. How cute are those! I love quick and cute DIY crafts. I'm definitely making some of these as small gifts this year, and for myself. We have a store in the historic district down here that uses scrabble tiles as decoration and the owner is so sweet. I'm giving her one too :)

  12. Oh my gosh, these are so adorable! We have a scrabble game that we never use and I just give this a try. In fact, my daughter is having a sleepover and this might just be the perfect activity to keep two eleven years old busy!

  14. The new version is just as beautiful as the last years! I love how you covered the back too and the tip about the fake snow. I always wondered where that crafting fake snow came from. I'm going to have to get my sister and sister-in-law together for one of these crafting parties. I bet you all share lots of laughs while doing this too.

    1. Yeah, that fake snow was a good find! And, yes, we do have a lot of fun when we get together. You should definitely force some crafting upon your own family! :)

  15. Oh my gosh, how adorable are these ornaments?? I love the idea of 'forced crafting' and will try to talk my sisters into coming next year to build gingerbread houses. The last time I did them, I was vacuuming up little candy balls for weeks! Those suckers bounce a long ways. LOL

    1. Wow, gingerbread houses is ambitious. We did one one year that had every member of our family represented! It came out really cute - but it was a lot of work!

Lol about the bouncing candy balls heading everywhere!

  18. I love these! Some of my best Christmas memories are doing crafts at my maternal grandmother's house when we were kids. I should talk my sisters into starting a new tradition! Or I guess I should just make them do it! :)

    1. Yes! You do not "talk them into it." You FORCE them! :) They'll thank you for it!
