Less Wordy Wed: The Dog Doesn't Want To Be A Bother

Usually Rita sleeps later than I do and I'm up before her, but the other morning I came around the corner and here she was, waiting patiently by the backdoor to go out:

This is what she does when she wants to go in or out. She waits.

She knows to scratch at the door if she desperately wants out there - like when she spots the neighbor's cat in our yard. Then she frantically claws at the door.

But otherwise? Nope. She takes a "I'll just wait until until someone notices" attitude and waits us out. I guess she doesn't want to be a bother.

Sometimes I have to remind her, "It's okay to ask!"

She's a funny, sweet little thing.

  1. My guys are just like that! Wildlife causes an urgent need to go out, but otherwise they never ask.......well except for when they have diarrhea. Then thankfully they ASK ;-)

    1. That's funny that they are the same. I thought she was alone in her weirdness. (And, yes, that's good that they know when to ASK!)

  2. Phod is the same way. He will come and nudge you if he is desperate but mostly just sits by the door and waits patiently. It is really cute. Hailey on the other hand, scratches . . . . a lot.

    1. Iit is SO cute how they wait patiently. Glad Rtia's not the only one. Hailey sounds like our previous dogs who would also scratch A LOT! We still have the marks to show it.

    1. She is *mostly* a very good girl, as we tell her all the time. (Including the "mostly" part...)

  4. Rita is such a sweetie! My three are the same way, especially in the morning when I'm still in bed. If any of them wake us, we know it is a true emergency!

    1. That's nice! It's awesome to have a dog that doesn't wake you up in the morning - except in case of emergency!

  5. Ah Rita what a good girl, normally Barney sleeps longer than me too and then every now and again, he surprises me by being all lively and awake!

    1. Rita is a first class sleeper. :) But it's fun when they surprise us, isn't it?

  6. Mine are not that polite. I have a small pillow hanging on the door knob that says "Wipe your paws." They bring it to me when they want to go out which is rather frequently since they seem to feel they must bring order to the neighborhood.

    1. That is so cute that they bring you the pillow when they need to go out! Very talented! My sis once hung bells and taught her beagle to ring them, but then he was constantly smacking the bells to go out and it got a little old pretty quickly. :)

  7. Mabel and Hazel will wake me up if they need to go out, but otherwise if the doggy door is not accessable, they just wait for me to make them go out most of the time

    1. I wish we had a doggy door but we don't really have the set up for it at the moment.

    1. It is sweet, isn't it? It really is like she doesn't want to bother us. Pups are funny.

  9. Oh, that is so sweet! I wish mine would be that patient. They almost always scratch frantically at the door even when it's not urgent. Or just a little scratch but if you don't come right away, they'll keep doing it every 10 seconds!

  12. Isis used to kind of chirp at the back door. It was cute, but very annoying because she did it when she was bored, not just because she had to go out. Somehow, I trained Leo to knock papers of a table when he wants to go out. I'd prefer if he chirped, or pawed the door, but whatever. The cute thing he does is push his water dish around when it's empty. "Hello, hello! I'm thirsty!"

  15. Mr. N will go sit by the door or stare at you until you notice him. If you're being really dense, he'll bark once.

  16. Rita is such a singular girl. I can't imagine getting her confused with any other dog.

  17. Our blind Brook is the same way, just sits and waits. Coming in is a different story. She literally throws her little body against the door and barks as if there is something coming after her!

  19. My comment wouldn't go through on previous post. Let's try it here.

Unfortunately the thunder and rain didn't get this far north. We just got the humidity and clouds which was not pleasant. We had some visitors from Indiana last week and they are totally saturated from rain and more rain. Farmers check the fields on surf boards.

  20. OK that is weird, never had that happen.

  21. I used to joke that Hector would wait all night and day to come back inside, whereas all the other dogs "Yell" (bark) if they're sitting at the door for more than 10 seconds! LOL! To go out, Hector would bop the doorknob with his nose. He taught himself how to do it, after watching humans turn the doorknob!!!
