My Dog Is A Walking Contradiction. Literally. Like, On Walks, I Mean.

Rita is... kind of odd sometimes. (Okay, a lot of the time.)

One thing that's odd about her is that she doesn't really like strangers... and yet, when we go on walks, she often turns up people's walkways as if she wants to go say hi. My normally antisocial dog starts acting social.
There are never people around when she does this, but often she'll turn up some random walkways and start heading for the front door.

I always have to tell her, "They don't want a visit from you,"** and kinda drag her away.

Sometimes I really wish I knew what was going on in her fuzzy little head. Maybe she smells another dog that she thinks she might like? Maybe she smells steak?? Who knows?!

Does your dog ever do that??

**Okay, probably would be more truthful of me to say, "Momma doesn't like to talk to strangers so let's go." Normally, she knows all about "stranger danger"! It's something we have in common. :)

  1. I've actually had Jimmy run in someone's open door! Very embarrassing having to retrieve him!

    1. That's so funny! I have a very funny story similar to that about our beagle. Maybe I'll share it for a post some day. :)

  2. Sometimes Booker T will do that. I can't figure it out either. I know sometimes he knows things we don't, but I sure wish he would clue us in!

    1. Maybe they're trying to tell us where the "good people" live??

  3. Mine will do that. I'm sure they are lured by cooking odors, not people smells.

  4. The boys always meet so many people on our adventures. I'm not a talkative person, I let the boys say Hi in their own doggy way, then we carry on! BOL!

    1. I'm not talkative either - although I know you'd never know it since I can't seem to be wordless on Wednesdays!

  5. How funny Rita is. When we walk Lily and Arliss, Lily always wants to walk up to front doors, but Arliss doesn't have any interest in it.

    1. Funny that Lily does that too. Wonder what's going on in their furry heads??

  6. That's pretty funny. Ruby is not big on strangers either, but she also doesn't like going near stranger's homes or stuff either.

  8. Milo stops stares and assesses
Cole would see a car drive into their garage and want to stay til they came out. Obviously they drove some distance to see him!

    1. Haha. Rita does that too if someone pulls in. I'm always telling her not to star!

  9. Rita is just naturally curious. I always want to see what's at the end of any walkway, stairs, trail, etc. But if it's strangers....forget it! I'm not interested either. :)

  10. That's so funny! My first thought was that she smelled the dogs that lived there, but smelling food cooking inside is a good guess too.

    1. Yeah, thinking the food is more likely, since she only likes certain dogs.

  11. HA! that's funny. Harley and Jaxson don't ever venture into someone's walkway. They do speed up when we get closer to the house. Does that count?

    1. Rita does the same! Cuz she gets a treat once we get home!

  12. My dog once did that, years and years ago. We lived in a townhouse, and there were many that looked identical. We think that he was confused about which one was ours!

That's funny that Rita does it regularly! :)

  13. You are hilarious!! I am sitting here laughing so hard, Charlie just let out a heavy sigh like, "Mo-om!! Stop laughing!! You're so embarrassing!! I'm tryin' to sleep over here!" LOL! Timba and Hobie used to try to go up stairways and porches and things. :)

    1. Oh, I'm glad to give you a good laugh - but sorry about that, Charlie! :)

Funny that Timba and Hobie would do it too. I guess Rita's not the only odd dog!

  14. We all love to greet people, and sometimes we will try to go to the wrong house. Mom has always wondered why.

  15. Mom, if she smells steak, you need to knock on the door and invite yourselves in. Steak is good.

  16. Yes, stranger danger. I am antisocial, but both dogs, especially Roxy, are positive everyone is there for them.

    1. Our Abby was like that too. Miss social butterfly. Very hard for her antisocial mom. :)

  17. That is strange, but I guess her nose tells her there's something interesting to be found at the neighborhood houses.

    1. The nose does seem to be the logical answer I think.

  18. Seriously strolled right inside someone's house last week during a walk. It was SO embarrassing but thankfully the people were nice about it. I have no idea why she walked inside. Maybe she wanted company. Maybe she smelled something good. Maybe she was bored. Like you said, who knows.
    P.S. Rita is so adorable.

  19. Go figure. Who can get inside their minds? LOL

Delilah has figured out that when we stop to talk to someone, she gets treats. Now she sees a person and heads their way, because she wants her treats.

  20. My Husky does that all the time, when we get to a walkway she just wants to go up to the door. It's so weird isn't it? I love your text bubbles in these adorable photos - too funny!

  23. Curiosity...aka dogs is a fascinating phenomena to watch. I'm always intrigued to figure out what motivates a particular search. With his long nose, Sam experiences life as if he were drinking from a firehose!
