Making Our Walking Routine Less Routine

I/we take Rita for a walk pretty much every single morning. We have a lovely 'hood, with lots of different routes that we can take, but still... sometimes you need a change.

So, lately - maybe once every other week - Rita and I hop in the car and drive down to the next 'hood. It's fun because Rita gets to sniff new things, and I get to see new things. (And, since I started running again recently, it's especially good since it's flat, while our 'hood is super hilly!)

Sometimes I find pretty new places to pose Rita...

...And sometimes we meet new friends! This puppy was the cutest!

...And sometimes I just like to check out other folks' water-wise yards. Isn't this one so pretty?

If you're finding your walking routine to be a little too routine lately, we suggest heading to a new neighborhood!

Do you go for daily walks? How do you keep them interesting?

We'll be on a little "spring blogging break" next week, so we'll see you the following week!

Thanks to BlogPaws for hosting Wordless Wednesday! You can check out all the blogs in the hop here.

  1. I do the same thing. Pop the boys in the car and head to different trails. They love reading new p-mail, and I like the change of scenery and a new photo-op. Enjoy your break!

  2. I don't drive at all so for during the weekly walks we go to our local park. I used to try different routes here but we encountered to many off leash or poorly contained dogs. Weekends we tend to go to the ritzier downtown area fir a change of scene

    1. We've had to eliminate many routes from our 'hood because of off-leash dogs. We have a few quiet, out-of-the-way streets here, where folks think it's cool to let their dogs (that they have no control over!) walk off leash. Now we only go on those streets if the hubs is along to run interference!

  3. We have a lot of different routes for our morning walks to keep up the variety. We usually end up driving for a walk at least once a week somewhere else interesting.

    1. Sometimes we'll also drive to a park to explore. It's nice to see something different!

  4. First of all, enjoy your spring blogging break! We walk our dog 5-6 days a week. Usually one day a week it's raining when we get home from work so we have to play inside because Booker T apparently has a condition that causes him to melt if he is wet or has to walk on wet land. You are right - they really love going to new places and checking out new things. Also, that pup is adorable!

    1. Wow, wish we got a lot of rain like that! Tell Booker T that Rita has that same condition! He's not alone!

  5. I love walking new places. When are in one place too long, it gets kinds boring. Torrey feels the same way.

    1. We are definitely not the only ones who like cruising to check out a new 'hood!

  7. The state was nice enough to put a university within an easy walk of our house. There is no place better to explore.

    1. Well, that was awfully nice of the state! We have a univ'y not too far from us - but getting parking anywhere near there is a pain. But maybe one day we'll try to go explore there. Could be interesting!

  8. I try to walk mine every day but it doesn't always happen! I think it's a great idea to switch up your walking routine! Those pictures are gorgeous! :D

    1. Thanks. We usually only skip our daily walks if I'm *really* sick or if it's raining - which is rare here! Since the weather's almost always nice we don't usually get an excuse to skip it! (Although there's supposed to be thunderstorms here on Fri! Here's hopin'!)

  9. We have several different routes in our neighborhood that we walk. Plus if I'm running errands, Mr. N usually goes with me so he's been all over the city.

    1. Rita comes along with me when she can to run errands. It's good for her to get out and do/see new things!

  10. We agree the same walk every day can get boring! We're just waiting for some warmer, drier temps to start going places more. Love Dolly

    1. We have an overabundance of warm dry weather here! We are supposed to get some rain this Friday, and hopefully they aren't wrong about that!

  11. Unfortunately we are very limited to where we can walk because we live so rurally. However, all the wildlife creates great smells. We are trying on weekends to get the dogs to new places if the weather allows (in the winter that just doesn't happen).

  12. I love that water-wise yard! So inspiring. I have yet to take the plunge and do that here, but I do take mental notes when I see really spectacular water-friendly examples on walks. And you're right: It's a good reason to head to a new 'hood from time to time!

  13. We have different routes for different days. The week days in the morning are the best because most of the neighbors are at work which means all the other doggies are inside. We're free to walk and roam wherever we choose.

  14. It's definitely fun to get out to new neighborhoods to walk (I love seeing different houses and gardens), but we don't do it as often as we should. Right now everything is new since we're in a new home, and we still have lots of streets and routes to explore. We're still learning which houses have dogs which is fun with Sheba, and necessary to know with the other two! :)

  15. Oh yes. I love taking Cocoa to new places. For her and for me!! We go to different towns or parks. I get so bored walking the same routes and she gets super tired smelling all the new smells.

  16. I like the idea of exploring new neighborhoods. Ruby is sometimes a bit nervous of exploring new places, but usually with a little encouragement she relaxes.

  17. What a great idea going to other hoods. Beautiful walk!

  18. It is nice to take your pooch someplace new to keep it interesting! We have such a variety of trails outside our backdoor that novelty isn't an issue. However, we stop and play training games to keep both of us on our toes!

    Have a great break!

  19. Well being a cat I tend to pick my own hood to walk in! However there are times when changing my hood leads to grief and pain when the resident moggie chases me!!! Rita you look very pretty posing in front the flowers!! xx

  20. Twice a day, rain or shine. Sam tends to enjoy a routine and can pretty much rely on it for making turns at the right junction. It is nice though to take a different course every once in while to keep his mind stimulated and to check out nicely xeriscaped yards. As long as Sam finds something to pee on, he's happy and as long as it isn't in someone's yard, I'm happy. ;)

  22. Ooh, that's a pretty azalea bush. I bet all the doggies in the new neighborhood are wondering who you are when they're out on their walks and picking up your scent.

  23. Change is always good. Love the puppy. So cute!

  24. We're lucky that we have many options in our neighborhood so walks rarely get boring.

Except for poor Sampson, he is so limited on where he can go that sometimes I need to load him into the car for a change of scenery.
