On one hike, we saw three javelina, which, according to Wikipedia, are also called peccaries or "skunk pigs". They were super cute, and Rita was pretty excited about the bit of piggy mischief!
Sorry these pig pics aren't great. The day we saw them, I only had my phone with me, not my good camera. The hike was so beautiful, we went back again the next day with my Nikon, but the javelina were hiding that day. (Mischievous hiding pigs!)

In other news, Rita's paws, which are normally white-socked...
Rita's usually white toes |
Yep, those are the same paws pictured above |
She did not enjoy getting her feet cleaned off with baby wipes each day when we got back to our rental house. Poor, mistreated pup.
She was exhausted after our hikes each day!
It was so pretty there!
I'll share some more pics on Wordless Wednesday, and, if I remember for a change, on the next See Beautiful hop.
P.S. Thank you all for all the nice condolences messages about my mom. You guys are the best.

Looks so beautiful!
ReplyDeleteIt was SO pretty there!
DeleteWere you in the Sedona area? We were there a few years ago and also saw and heard (at night) javelinas. That last picture looks like a few places we visited. Looking forward to seeing more pictures on Wednesday
ReplyDeleteYes, we were in Sedona! Such a unique place. We've been there many times. We were even fantasizing about buying a house there - but the hubs seemed to be having some terrible allergies there, so that was no good!
DeleteWow, cool pigs :-) Laughed about Rita's paws. Rudy says to tell Rita she's lucky she's not a white dog because it takes more than baby wipes then...
ReplyDeleteHer whole tummy was peach colored too, but luckily an old towel and a bunch of baby wipes did the trick!
DeleteWhat a treat to see javelina pigs! Looks like a beautiful place. I'm sorry about your mom, I think I missed that somehow so I'll backtrack.
ReplyDeleteWe've heard they're illusive, so it was neat to see them. Glad we always keep Rita on leash!
DeleteThose pictures are gorgeous. What a wonderful place to hike. We had such beautiful weather yesterday the boys got to go out to a local field and play football with each other. Cass likes to run with the ball, and Booker T just likes to hit him! Haha.
ReplyDeleteThat's so funny. It's good they each have their positions they like to play! :)
DeleteLooks like Sedona. Torrey feet do that too, so funny.
ReplyDeleteYep, it was Sedona. So beautiful there!
DeleteRita's peach paws are quite striking. If she is like my dogs she takes 10 steps on hikes for every step I take so no wonder we can wear them out on a hike.
ReplyDeleteShe was a trooper on those hikes, man! It's funny cuz at home on our walks she can often just dork around and want to sniff, but she was setting some furious paces on our hikes!
DeleteI only saw javelina on driving out of a hiking area. I am glad I haven't seen them on our actual hikes - I have heard they can be aggressive. Okay, okay, so I am only drawing on the experience of reading Old Yeller and how those peccaries attacked Yeller... but still...
ReplyDeleteI've heard they can be aggressive too but also shy, so I'm assuming they are only aggressive if they feel threatened. (I read they are aggressive to other javelina coming into "their" territory, so maybe that's why they have that reputation? But it's only toward other pigs??) Anyway, I'm glad we always keep Rita on leash because she wanted to take off after them! And then who knows what would have happened!
DeleteOh yes, another reason I keep B on leash. She wants to either hunt down or make friends with wild animals we encounter.
DeleteI saw a woman on that same hike with her dog off leash, although on a different part of the trail. Wonder if they saw the pigs too? I just wouldn't trust Rita wiith wild things around!
Deletevery pretty
ReplyDeleteIsn't it?
DeletePoor Rita! Baby wipes are so demeaning!
ReplyDeleteWe are very sorry about your Mom! :'(
Baby wipes ARE demeaning. At least they were unscented so she didn't end up smelling like a baby!
Deletelooks like a pretty place to hike!
ReplyDeletehugs
Mr Bailey, Hazel & Mabel
I thnk it's one of the prettiest places to hike, outside of Hawaii!
DeleteWe loved Sedona when we were there a few years ago, it is SO beautiful! Harley did too! We never so those piggies though, they are awfully cute! Shasta is subjected to baby wipes as well and he agrees with Rita, they are liked and barely tolerated! :-)
ReplyDeleteThat's nice that you've been there before too. Everyone needs to go there at least once - so pretty!
DeleteFun adventures in a beautiful place.
ReplyDeleteWe did a lot of great hiking there. It was really nice.
DeleteWhere was this?...it looks like you could have run into KB Bear on one of those hikes :-)
ReplyDeleteThis was in Sedona, AZ. I saw that KB Bear was in red rock country too, but I also saw they had snow - not sure where they were! We were hoping for snow but didn't get any. (Although I saw they were getting some today. We just missed it!)
DeleteThe javalinas are so camo'd I might have missed them. Beautiful hiking for you to heal in between moments of care. LeeAnna
ReplyDeleteThey were easy to see IRL cuz they were on the move.
DeleteThat would be so fun to see a piggy! The paw transformation is pretty amazing! At first we thought she had her "fur done" at a fancy salon!
ReplyDeleteHahah. Yah, it looks like she got her fur dyed.
DeleteAren't javelinas considered an invasive species? Or maybe I am confusing them with feral pigs which definitely are (at least here). That is something about Rita's paws....lol.
ReplyDeleteI don't think they are. When I looked them up it seemed to say they are native to parts of South America and the southwest of No Am.
DeleteThe pig pictures are cool, looks like another great hike.
ReplyDeleteIt was an awesome hike!
DeleteIt looks like everyone had a great time...other than having to get their paws cleaned off!
ReplyDeleteThe paw cleaning part is no fun for anyone.
DeleteWhat a beautiful and exciting excursion. I bet Rita would have liked to have chased the little piggies. I can't believe how red Rita's toes became!
ReplyDeleteI appreciate your guidelines. It’s nice information for us.
ReplyDeletehello rita its dennis the vizsla dog hay wow yoo got to see bacon in the wild??? wow!!! i hope yoo git to ketch sum nekst time yoo kan fry it up rite their on those desert roks i bet!!! i am sorry to heer abowt yore mamas mama saya and i ar sending lots of tail wags for her!!! ok bye
ReplyDeleteSedona is a magical place for both paws and souls. The piggy photo is quite remarkable-I've heard they avoid two-legged uprights as much as possible! Well done.
