Darling Pigs & Dirty Paws

We took Rita on a little hiking vacation last week.

On one hike, we saw three javelina, which, according to Wikipedia, are also called peccaries or "skunk pigs". They were super cute, and Rita was pretty excited about the bit of piggy mischief!
Sorry these pig pics aren't great. The day we saw them, I only had my phone with me, not my good camera. The hike was so beautiful, we went back again the next day with my Nikon, but the javelina were hiding that day. (Mischievous hiding pigs!)

In other news, Rita's paws, which are normally white-socked...
Rita's usually white toes
...turned fully peach color from all the dust since we were hiking in red-rock country.
Yep, those are the same paws pictured above

She did not enjoy getting her feet cleaned off with baby wipes each day when we got back to our rental house. Poor, mistreated pup.

She was exhausted after our hikes each day!

It was so pretty there!

I'll share some more pics on Wordless Wednesday, and, if I remember for a change, on the next See Beautiful hop.

P.S. Thank you all for all the nice condolences messages about my mom. You guys are the best.

  1. Were you in the Sedona area? We were there a few years ago and also saw and heard (at night) javelinas. That last picture looks like a few places we visited. Looking forward to seeing more pictures on Wednesday

    1. Yes, we were in Sedona! Such a unique place. We've been there many times. We were even fantasizing about buying a house there - but the hubs seemed to be having some terrible allergies there, so that was no good!

  2. Wow, cool pigs :-) Laughed about Rita's paws. Rudy says to tell Rita she's lucky she's not a white dog because it takes more than baby wipes then...

    1. Her whole tummy was peach colored too, but luckily an old towel and a bunch of baby wipes did the trick!

  3. What a treat to see javelina pigs! Looks like a beautiful place. I'm sorry about your mom, I think I missed that somehow so I'll backtrack.

    1. We've heard they're illusive, so it was neat to see them. Glad we always keep Rita on leash!

  4. Those pictures are gorgeous. What a wonderful place to hike. We had such beautiful weather yesterday the boys got to go out to a local field and play football with each other. Cass likes to run with the ball, and Booker T just likes to hit him! Haha.

    1. That's so funny. It's good they each have their positions they like to play! :)

  5. Looks like Sedona. Torrey feet do that too, so funny.

  6. Rita's peach paws are quite striking. If she is like my dogs she takes 10 steps on hikes for every step I take so no wonder we can wear them out on a hike.

    1. She was a trooper on those hikes, man! It's funny cuz at home on our walks she can often just dork around and want to sniff, but she was setting some furious paces on our hikes!

  7. I only saw javelina on driving out of a hiking area. I am glad I haven't seen them on our actual hikes - I have heard they can be aggressive. Okay, okay, so I am only drawing on the experience of reading Old Yeller and how those peccaries attacked Yeller... but still...

    1. I've heard they can be aggressive too but also shy, so I'm assuming they are only aggressive if they feel threatened. (I read they are aggressive to other javelina coming into "their" territory, so maybe that's why they have that reputation? But it's only toward other pigs??) Anyway, I'm glad we always keep Rita on leash because she wanted to take off after them! And then who knows what would have happened!

    2. Oh yes, another reason I keep B on leash. She wants to either hunt down or make friends with wild animals we encounter.

    3. I saw a woman on that same hike with her dog off leash, although on a different part of the trail. Wonder if they saw the pigs too? I just wouldn't trust Rita wiith wild things around!

  8. Poor Rita! Baby wipes are so demeaning!

We are very sorry about your Mom! :'(

    1. Baby wipes ARE demeaning. At least they were unscented so she didn't end up smelling like a baby!

  10. We loved Sedona when we were there a few years ago, it is SO beautiful! Harley did too! We never so those piggies though, they are awfully cute! Shasta is subjected to baby wipes as well and he agrees with Rita, they are liked and barely tolerated! :-)

    1. This was in Sedona, AZ. I saw that KB Bear was in red rock country too, but I also saw they had snow - not sure where they were! We were hoping for snow but didn't get any. (Although I saw they were getting some today. We just missed it!)

  14. That would be so fun to see a piggy! The paw transformation is pretty amazing! At first we thought she had her "fur done" at a fancy salon!

  15. Aren't javelinas considered an invasive species? Or maybe I am confusing them with feral pigs which definitely are (at least here). That is something about Rita's paws....lol.

    1. I don't think they are. When I looked them up it seemed to say they are native to parts of South America and the southwest of No Am.

  18. What a beautiful and exciting excursion. I bet Rita would have liked to have chased the little piggies. I can't believe how red Rita's toes became!

  21. Sedona is a magical place for both paws and souls. The piggy photo is quite remarkable-I've heard they avoid two-legged uprights as much as possible! Well done.
