My Dog's So Weird: Miss Sniff

Instead of Mischief Monday, today we have Miss Sniff Monday.

Rita has some funny habits, and this is one of her more amusing ones. Every morning, when I get dressed, as soon as she hears the rustling of the fabric of my clothes, she comes running to sniff my pants.

If I'm putting on yoga pants or shorts, she's pretty sure she's getting a walk and her tail starts wagging.
Me, getting my shorts ready to put on
If I'm putting on something dressier or jeans, or if the Daddy is putting on his work pants, well, then she walks away dejected.
The Daddy, getting his shorts on
She was definitely right about our shorts this day. We took her for a hike. Will share her silly hiking mischief next week.

It's fairly Standard Operating Pupcedure for a pup to sniff your pants when you come home, checking out where you've been, but does your dog sniff your pants when you're getting ready to go out?

Thanks to Snoopy’s Dog Blog, Alfie’s Blog, and My Brown Newfies for hosting Monday Mischief!

  1. Cole doesn't smell but he comes upstairs to watch the clothing choices and sizes up the situation. He's most happy with sweats, as he knows it's a mommy cole day ahead. LeeAnna

    1. That's so funny. They know our routines so well.

  2. Shasta does and I've always wondered why? I'll be looking forward to hearing what others have to say....

    1. They must know a lot more about how our clothes smell than we do! (Which is probably a good thing. I'm not sure I'd want to know what my clothes mean by the smell!)

    1. Haha. Yes! Better than her mom, that's for sure!

  4. I go running upstairs if I hear the zipper on jeans or shorts as that means a walk...all quiet means running clothes and 90% of the time I don't go running. No sniffin', just sound and looks for me.

    1. That's funny. It's initially the sound that makes Rita comes running, but then she has to give everything a good sniff!

  5. No, my guys don't seem to care. John has worked from home for so many years that they are rarely alone. They probably don't worry about being included or not. My old boy Dylan used to come running when he heard the velcro sound on John's scandals however, as that definitely meant a walk!

    1. Funny. I had some velcro walking shoes too long ago, and our beag would come running!

  6. We sniff mom's shoes. If she's wearing sneakers we know we're headed out for a walk. If she's wearing shoes we know she is getting ready to abandon us and go to work! Can't wait to hear all about your hike! :)

  7. Torrey does the same thing. What pants, what shoes, then she knows if she is staying home or not.

    1. So funny. I guess Rita's not so weird after all if Torrey does the same.

  8. Hi Y'all!

Of course I sniff their clothes before they go out! It helps me to detect where they've been when they return. It also helps me to know if I'm going to be included!

    Y'all come on by,

    1. Oh, interesting that it also helps you figure out the difference in the smell when they get home. Gotta get a 'base line' knowledge set before they leave! For Rita, I think it's just to see if she gets to go along.

  9. My pugs pay attention to what shoes I put on! If I am changing into tennis shoes, on Monday no less, they know someone is going to training class!

  10. Sure does - it determines whether or not he's going. When we're dressing for church, Harley will know automatically and walk away. Silly Doodle! CONGRATULATIONS! I wanted to let you know that I have nominated you for the Liebster Award. I so enjoy your website. You can read about it here! http://bit.ly/1CKSkVv

  13. They don't sniff when we go out, but if I get up and go in the bathroom and change my pants, they know exactly what time it is. Walkie time. :-)

  14. Oh Rita, you are one smart pup ;-) Our pups know exactly what it means when I'm headed into the laundry room every morning...that's where we keep our dog backpacks, collars, and leashes.

    1. Yeah, I keep Rita's leash in a drawer by the front door - so she knows what that means too, when I head for the drawer!

  15. Mine sniff my pants when I come home from walking shelter doggies. They tell me I smell like betrayal. Actually, they do sniff my jeans when I get dressed too. But since I always wear jeans, there are no clues about whether I'm taking them with me or not.

    1. I change out of my shelter-dog-walking pants in the garage, so she never gets to sniff those, but man she sniffs the rest of me when I come home from the shelter. And, yes, betrayal! That's the smell!

  16. Dogs are so funny. They are keen observers of patterns. Shorts = hike. My dogs sleep in my bedroom, and in the morning, they barely move as I get ready, take a shower, brush my teeth, open the closet door several times. But they always know when I'm ready to open the door, and get up, stretch and wait. I haven't figured out what the "tell" is, but they always know.

    1. Funny. For Rita, the "tell" is the sound of the fabric when I pick up my shorts/pants. She pretty much just lays on the bed until she hears that sound. Then she comes running!

  17. Cute! Boomer really sniffs me up after I get home from walking the shelter dogs! :)

  20. Nope, but if he thinks I'm going to leave without him, he'll sit on my clothes to try to stop me from getting dressed!

    1. That's so funny. My mom's dog would do that with a suitcase full of clothes - get in it and sit on them.
