Valentine's Mischief: Pets Over Partners?!

Petplan, which we use for Rita's insurance, surveyed 4800 pet parents with some questions about Valentine’s Day. Some of the results were kind of amusing, and maybe sound like your house or mine??

When asked if they'd rather kiss their four legged friend or their two-legged sweetie, 60% of women (uh, that's the majority) answered... their pet! Meanwhile, 62% of the men said they'd rather kiss their partner. (Poor men. Do you think they answered truthfully, or were they just afraid their wives would find out what they said?)

As for gifts, 76% of respondents said they plan to buy their pet a present. Again, men kinda end up getting the short end of the stick here, since 52% of women admitted they spend more on the dog/cat than their partner, while 70% of men said they spend more on their partners. Bummer, dudes.

I thought these results were pretty amusing, since in my novel Rescue Me, Maybe the main character, Jane, secretly loved her dog more than her hubby. She definitely would have rather kissed the dog than the hubs.

How about you? Okay, I won't ask if you'd rather kiss your pet or your partner..., but are you planning to get your pet a V. Day gift?

If so, Petplan created Eat, Play, Love: A Gift Guide for Furry Friends - check it out for some ideas for your pets!

Shhhh.... Okay, this is one last bit of mischief... but Rita's not getting any V. Day presents! Poor deprived girl! (Of course, I'm not getting any either, and neither is the hubs, but I think we'll all survive!)

Note: We were not compensated for this post about the Petplan survey or gift guide. We just thought it was fun and wanted to share.

Thanks to Snoopy’s Dog Blog, Alfie’s Blog, and My Brown Newfies for hosting Monday Mischief!

  1. Well, judging by the amount of, frankly embarrassing, kisses the human puts on me, I would say she aligns with the majority of women!! MOL

  2. Lol. I'd *rather* kiss the hubs, but I kiss the dog more frequently! She's not much of a kisser-back though.

  3. Blueberry isn't getting a V-day gift. I even forgot her gotcha day and she didn't get anything then either. Isn't every day special for a dog? Just this weekend Blueberry found a cheeto and a french fry on the ground and ate them both. I don't think any store bought gift could top that. ;)

    1. NOTHING could be better than finding both a cheeto AND a french fry in the same day. That's, like, better than Christmas! :)

  4. That's exactly the basis of our new contest. Go 4 legged furry valentines :) lol Plus you don't have to share chocolate with your valentine that way ;)

    1. Have to stop by and check out your contest. And, yes, excellent point about the chocolate!

  5. Nah....we don't give out presents for V-day. To the humans or the animals. As for kissing, I'd rather kiss Sampson vs Delilah, cause' I know what she eats. :-)

    1. Too funny about kissing Sampson. Yeah, reading your latest post, I'd rather kiss him too!

    1. That's nice. Some years Rita gets a little something, but we're skipping this year. She's got so many toys already!

  7. No I won't go buy a specific V-day gift for the dogs. I buy them so many special training treats, everyday is V-Day.

I'd be more than happy to skip the human V-day stuff as well, but that wouldn't go over so well. So close on the heels of Christmas, I find V-Day annoying more than anything. I'm such a Grinch (but dressed in red this month)!

    1. Exactly - every day is V.Day! As the hubs and I say: "We don't need the greeting card company to remind us to celebrate our love. Every day is a celebration of our love." (This must be said in a funny voice...)

  8. We got a kick out of this, too! We celebrate everything around here! BOL!

  9. Funny as Mom was just saying this weekend how much nicer it is to cuddle with us than male humans...

  10. I'm more about the hugs with Cole... although he feels hugs are aggressive he allows them.
As for kisses, I've seen what he licks and where he lies in the yard... we hope to go to the Valentine contra/swing dance that day, but hope to have take out, a movie and be with Cole that night. Perfect!

    1. That does sound like a perfect night. We usually just have dinner at home and watch a movie. (I HATE going out to eat on V.Day. Take out/ home cooked is the way to go, don't you think?) And usually I make chocolate creme brulee for V.Day, but we're having a family part this year, so the c.c.b.'s will have to wait until next year!

  11. I did at one time have a t-shirt that read "J'embrasse mon chien sure la bouche." But in a close tally,I believe the human boy gets more kisses than the pup-boy. No Valentines Day stuff for us. And I know you guys don't do that either, so where the heck did Rita get the pink "love" pillow?

    1. She got it from one of her admirers! (Rocket it sent it to her - I think last year. But they made a pact not to send each other gifties this year!)

  12. You made me laugh with those stats! I haven't decided on the gifts yet but, most years, we all go for a hike together and then out to dinner (doggy bags for the pups)!

    1. That sounds like a nice way to spend the holiday. I'm sure we'll at least go for a walk all together that day!

  13. That was interesting. The dogs got some homemade pheasant treats which will be talked about tomorrow and yes yes I rather kiss all three dogs and the cat before the hubs. ;)

  16. LOL we really don't do Valentine's Day here except that I made the dogs pose for sappy pictures. :)

  18. Nope, nothing special for V Day here. But then, we don't "do" any other occasion either. Hmmm....maybe the pack is a little deprived?!

  19. That is so funny! I was brought up to use any occasion for a celebration, so we'll have gifts (mostly small and silly) all 'round. Kisses, too :-)

  20. We don't do Valentine's Day around here either, though I was thinking about baking the dogs some treats. But I might do that anyway. And no, I'm not baking the hubby anything...LOL.
