Love To Go To the Dog Show But Not For the Dog Show

Today for less-wordy Wednesday, I'm sharing some of the (really terribly blurry*) pics I took at the recent dog show here in San Diego. Two of my sisters and I go pretty much every year, but I don't even care about the actual dog show.

You might wonder why someone would go to a dog show and not watch the show, but there are lots of other things to do.

First of all, we love to walk around and see all the cute pups, like this adorable beagle getting ready to go in the ring:
Every bit as cute as Miss P!
Also, there's always one hall set up for "meet the breed" and rescue groups. That's one of my fave parts. We met this gorgeous Irish wolfhound. (Oh, how I'd love to have a huge dog some day!)

And also met this equally gorgeous 7-month-old Great Pyr puppy. (Again, gotta love these gigantic breeds!)

The woman at the French Bulldog booth was wearing these adorable shoes! (Unlike the dogs, she stood still so this is the one pic I tool that's not blurry.)
So cute!
This is her dog. Siriusly (minus the blurriness), are those shoes not perfect for her?!

They also have dog agility and it's so fun to go watch. My agility pics are the worst cuz the pups move so fast, but I had to share this blurry one - that I almost missed by snapping too soon. Love that wild-eyed look in this bloodhound's eyes as he heads for the jump!

They also have lots of vendors and we love to do a little shopping. I got this super cute (and super soft - it's made of recycled plastic bottles!) T-shirt with a pup that reminds me of Abby on it. (She's lying on a rubber chicken toy, in case you were wondering what that is in the drawing.)

Have you ever been to a dog show? Did you watch the actual show?

* Seriously these pics are so bad. I only took my phone with me, not my camera, and the lighting wasn't great. I apologize for how bad they are. They're so bad I didn't even waste my time watermarking them!

Thanks to Blogpaws for hosting Wordless Wednesday!

  1. Not only do I go, I often participate (badly). As a novice fancier I'm still in awe of everything that goes on.

Most of the smaller ones don't have all the goodies you describe (maybe a couple vendors and a concession stand) but the big ones are AWESOME! I'll watch a few of my favorite breeds in the ring and maybe go support a friend or two as they show. Then I hit the vendors. I try to limit my spending, but it's fun to ooh and ahh. One show even had a course to run the dogs through. They chased a lure around a track going over, under and through various obstacles. It made for some fun photos and Jedi had a blast.

    1. Yes, we mostly ooh and ahh over the goodies for sale. If Rita had been with me, she would have insisted I buy her a bunch of toys and treats!

A lure track sounds like fun to watch! One year they had dock-diving at the event, which was really fun!

    1. Aren't those shoes the best? We thought maybe she had them custom made or something, but she said they found them at a discount store!

  3. LOL speaking from experience, you cannot take great moving dog pictures with a phone. Still, I keep trying and I don't think yours are as bad as most of mine! We go and participate. Sometimes we get ribbons. :) The thing is that when you have dogs entered, it is difficult to do all of the other things. There is a lot to do and I am glad you had fun. :)

    1. Yeah, it's hard to not pet all the dogs. Once they're done in the ring though, folks usually love to let us say hi.

  5. I have never been to a dog show - but you make it look fun!

Hahahaha - that's funny that you didn't watermark the photos this time. I only use a camera phone, so I sympathize with the blurry photos. I often have to take a boatload just to get a few good ones.

    1. Yeah, I took a boatload! These were the best of the worst! No need to watermark since no one will want to steal them!

  6. I love going to dog shows but like you never actually see much of the show...too busy looking at all the dogs and cool things for dogs they have to buy. I know the feeling with the photos...so hard to get a non-blurry shot. Those shoes are crazy!

    1. Yeah, so many more fun things to do than just watch the show! (We did watch a tiny bit of the flat-coated retrievers in the ring. Such pretty dogs! But they all look like winners to me!)

  9. I've gone to a few breed ring dog shows, but other than watching the Cardigans, I find it rather dry. Now agility shows (trials as they are known) are great fun to watch and participate in! The shopping is usually way better at the breed ring shows however. Most of my agility trials don't even have any vendors or if they do it is the same one or two every time.

    1. Yeah, watching the actual show I do find dry - mainly because the dogs all look fabulous to me! The agility was a lot of fun to watch, but my klutzy sisters and I were all saying we'd be bad at participating!

  10. there is a 4 day show near us every June. Sometimes we are entered in the obedience or rally rings. But other than catching the pug breed ring once in a while, I love to shop the vendors and watch the agility stuff too

  11. I've been to a bunch of dog shows! I go for the same reasons as you do! I love walking around and seeing all the breeds, meeting the dogs and shopping at the vendors. I do watch some of the classes but not always.

    1. Yeah, we watched a bit of the flat coated retrievers and a wee bit of the beagles. They were all so gorgeous, I'd have given them all a prize!

  12. I went to a local one, and made the mistake of reaching out to a poodle. Our standard was just a pup so I couldn't resist. SNAP! I was almost escorted off the premises for daring to think of touching the combed hair. Cole's sister was being shown, but luckily he never had to go thru the hours of competition. LeeAnna

    1. Oh dear! We always wait and ask but most of the people (and the dogs) are receptive luckily. There's always a few snappy ones in every crowd, eh?

  14. Jackie I go for the exact same reason! So much to see, I could sit on a bench in a corner with my coffee and watch people all day long! My husband often tells me I should volunteer so I could get in free. #men!

    1. Oh, we do get in free at this one! There's no charge - so it's even better! (Only have to pay to park.) But, yes, the people/pooch watching is pawesome!

  19. We've been to some dog shows, too, and I love them for a lot of the reasons you mentioned. I also like a lot of the cool demos they do, too. I've seen dog dancing, Earth dog competitions and working dog demos that really impressed me!

  20. Well, you know how much I love the dog show, since I always manage to go both days of the weekend. And, of course, it holds a special place in my heart since it's where we found our Lou!

  21. I've never been to a dog show, but I would love to go to one. I think I would be pretty interested in all of the other stuff going on (especially the cute dogs and shopping), not just the show itself.

  24. Wow, I've never been to a dog show and had no idea there was so much to see! I'll have to check one out sometime! We'll have to watch the Sacramento area since that is probably as close as one would come to us... but they look like too much fun to miss!
