Wordless Wednesday: Something Lovely with Something Icky

Do you ever wonder how your beautiful pups can stand to put some of the grossest things in their mouths??

This lovely girl is up for adoption at Helen Woodward Animal Center where I volunteer each week. There were plenty of nice, clean tennis balls to play with, but of course she wanted to play with the icky, muddy one! (Thank you to the genius who invented the ChuckIt! I never had to actually touch the thing!)

Isn't she gorgeous!? Her name is Heidi and she's about 7 months old. You can learn more about her here.
She LOVES to play ball!
Those ears!

Does your pup like to play with a toy that is so gross you can barely stand to touch it?

Luckily Rita is not much for fetch, and she has a nice dry mouth, so her toys don't get too icky!

Thanks to Blogpaws for hosting Wordless Wednesday!

  1. Oh my! She looks like our first baby Madison. She is the only female that we have had so i can say without hesitation that she was the smartest, prettiest, friendliest, and most amazing girls ever. The person that gives Heidi a loving home will be extremely lucky. Shared ☺

  2. Heidi! I wanted to name one of my shelter dog buddies Heidi! Do shepherds get adopted fast at your shelter? They do at mine, which is lucky, because otherwise I'd bring them all home. I shared Heidi on FB.

    1. We rarely have shepherd, to be honest. We get SO many puppies and chihuahuas. Shepherd mix pups go super fast. The only other pure looking shepherd we had was a gorgeous, huge white one. She went fast... but leapt a fence and killed a neighbor's chickens so she got returned. :( But she got adopted out again shortly after that - to someone w/ better fencing!

  4. We don't play fetch, but for our friends that do, we own a chuckit so Mom doesn't have to touch that ball!

  5. What a sweetie. Hope she finds a good home. Brown dawgs love fetch. Kong gets particularly slobbery. lol

    1. They need to invent a ChuckIt that can pick up a Kong!

  6. What a gorgeous dog! I am sure someone will adopt her and play ball with her--and I bet the won't care whether the ball is clean or stinky!

  7. Heidi is such a beauty! Hope she finds a home soon. Rudy and Rosie love to fetch just about everything and the dog slobber can get to be a bit much ;-)

    1. Sounds like non-fetching is another thing Rita and Jeffie might have in common!

  8. She's so pretty! Toby likes his toys best when they've been left outside in the rain and/or buried. Yuck.

  9. She is beautiful. And, yes...how do they always put the yuckiest stuff in their mouths?

    1. It's a mystery! You'd think they'd want a massive drink of water after picking up something so yucky.

    1. I'm sure she will too. We don't often get big dogs at H.W. so I'm sure someone looking for a big dog will want her!

  11. She is quite the cute pup. I guess the dirty tennis balls have more flavor? lol

  12. Since my dogs delight in eating poop of all sorts, it is nothing to them to play with a dirty toy! Heidi is beautiful. I can't believe someone hasn't snapped her up!

    1. Luckily Rita has not figured out the poop eating thing yet. Or maybe she just hasn't had the opportunity....

  14. Our dogs love to take their toys out in the rain and then try to drag them back in when they are wet and gross

    1. Oh, the ol' drag-the-toys-in-from-the-rain trick! That's a good one!

  15. Missy the alpha Poodle is so prissy that the balls we play with stay pristine through the whole game of fetch. . The being prissy thing doesn't extend to rolling in disgusting things that the ocean has thrown out though.

    1. Oh, if only it did extend to rolling in disgusting things the ocean throws out! (Rita loves to do that too!)

  16. I hope that Heidi finds a home soon! My dogs tend to pick up dead stuff with their mouths - and then it's my job to get that gross stuff away from them ;)

    1. Oh yeah - been there, done that. Dead gophers mostly. Good times. Good times.

  17. In the very beginning I used to wash Leo's ball, that ended quickly! I think I had to get over the fact that dogs could care less about clean vs. dirty.

  18. Oh my goodness. I love the second picture. She is totally ready for the ball! haha Hunter has this one toy.. a squeaky fox/squirrel kinda toy. It was so cheap.. and I didn't think he would like it. But it has been his absolute favorite. It's so gross and smelly! I hate that he brings it MY bed with him.

  19. Heidi is so cute! My girls will not touch a dirty ball. I am only allowed to throw them into pristine grass. LOL

  20. Jedi loves bones and antlers. I keep telling him they are inside treats, but somehow they end up in the backyard. (I blame Hubby.) I've had to bring in too many dirty, slimy, stinky bones. There's a point when they go straight to the trash.

  21. That ball is looking pretty nasty, but dogs probably think the nastier the better. Good thing you had the ChuckIt with you!

  24. What a cutie!

I guess I'm similar to Rita as I'm not big about fetch either, chase is more my game, I'm a herder! :)

    I hope you're having a fun day,

    Your pal Snoopy :)

  25. The one that gets me is the Kong. They love their Kongs. Sometimes after she's finished Delilah will bring me that Kong all covered in slobber and she wants to put it on my lap.

Sampson will often play with the Kong in the morning and he loves when you throw it, sadly with two dogs it's difficult to keep the fur off the carpets, no matter how much you vacuum, so often times I find myself picking up a hairy Kong.
