Monday Mischief: "I am NOT a Rabbit!"

Did you know that Saturday, Nov. 1 was "National Cook for Your Pets Day"?! (That "for" is really important in that title...) I didn't realize it until I flipped our PetPlan calendar over to November - which I did a day late.

But even though I didn't know it was NCfYP Day, I did recently start cooking for Rita. She's always eaten a good quality, grain-free kibble, with some organic canned food of one type or another mixed in. Pretty much no matter what I buy, and no matter how much she loves it on day one, but day 3 she's bored of it. Plus I got tired of always having to pick up cans of stuff for her, so I started cooking for her, and stirring this mix of organic meat, root veggies and green veggies in with her kibble.

And she loves it.
But... She does not like the carrots.

She started out eating them, but then she left one behind in the bowl as a message one day. We usually call her "Bunny" for her nickname, and I think she was beginning to get worried that we thought she was a rabbit, so she wanted to send us a message that she is NOT a bunny.
"I am not a rabbit!"
And then again that night she left another one.

And again the next morning.

And since we obviously weren't getting the message, she left two.
(Plus 1 pea.)
And then two again.

I'm happy to report that she ate ALL the carrots this morning. I think our carrot-standoff has hopefully resolved and she's realized we are not getting the hint, and not going to take the carrots out, so she might as well eat them.

Can you believe how picky she is? Are we the only ones with a crazy, picky mutt like this?

Thanks to Snoopy’s Dog Blog, Alfie’s Blog, and My Brown Newfies for hosting Monday Mischief!

  1. Rita, you were quite the mischievous girl hoping you wouldn't have to eat your carrots. Maybe they need to be cut into a different shape so they don't stick to the bottom of the bowl and you don't have to work so hard to eat them.

  3. My sisters love carrots, I don't like them myself. I carry them around with me and guard them for hours. I don't want them, but I don't want Katie and Bailie to have them either, so I understand not eating the carrots.

    1. That's so funny that you carry them around. I can understand not wanting your sisters to have them!

  4. Jeffie applauds Rita's good taste! He hates carrots, too. Unlike Rita, he won't eat them - ever. And if Rita likes bananas, she can have Jeffie's :-)

    1. Rita hates bananas. (Although I don't know how she knows that since she refuses to even try one.) Yet another thing she and Jeffie have in common!

  5. That's funny. My dogs love carrots. Whenever I'm making a salad and they hear me chopping they come running.

  6. Never knew there was such a day. The dogs we know are with you, they pit the carrots back out or yak them up lol

    1. Rita spits many things back at us. Like if you hand her a treat, and it's not the kind she wanted, she'll spit it back at you. Such a brat.

  7. The other day we were at Al's moms house. Torrey has always loved carrots and she had some fresh ones on the counter. I gave a piece to Torrey and she spit it out. Roxy swooped in and ate it though.

  8. LOL carrot stand off. That is so like over here but in our case it is any vegetable. We refuse to eat them. Have a marvellous Monday.

    1. Yeah, she hates most veggies, but she does like sweet potato and most types of squash. And kale chips!

  9. None of us humans like cooked carrots, but I cook them anyway because they look so pretty in the stew or with the pot roast. Fortunately my dogs serve as the garbage disposal for carrots. It's the least they can do for us.

    1. That's too funny. I like carrots! They're sweet. What's not to like about a carrot? :)

  10. I find it hard to believe a dog will turn it's nose up at anything. I could feed my dogs Old Roy from Walmart and they would think it was the best thing ever! If Rita balks at the carrots again, try grinding them in a food processor first. It will mix in better and also helps her absorb the nutrients. Dogs don't break down bulky veggies very well.

    1. I mushed them up with a fork this time. Rita chews her food like no dog I've ever seen before - so hopefully that helps break them down!

  11. I missed that holiday altogether! Had no idea. Harley "used" to be a carrot doodle. Somewhere during the summer he went on carrot strike, so I don't bother anymore.

    1. That's so funny that he's decided he doesn't like them. But then, Rita did the same thing with peanut butter. Just started turnign her nose up at it one day and now she won't touch it.

  17. We don't get to win very often with our pets, so I'm glad to see you won this standoff! LOL Our girls are picky about fruits/veggies, though they will eat most veggies as long as they are cooked. Luke gets bored with his plain kibble, but he loves all fruits and veggies so it's easy to find little extras to add to his food.

  19. Rita, my brother Harley loves carrots I'm not so sure. My Vet has said I'm a bit (like 2 lbs which doesn't sound like a lot to me) overweight so now the hoomans are giving them to me as a treat. I think I'm like you and going to have to just start eating them. Maybe we will learn to love them.... Shasta (my mum forgot to write this was from me the first time)
