Give Cancer the Paw: Putting the Fun in Funding for K9 Cancer Research

Welcome to the 2nd installment of the Give Cancer the Paw hop, from Pooch Smooches and Peggy's Pet Place!

As you know, if you've been following along, I love Morris Animal Foundation. (We had such a fun time at their annual gala last year.) You also might remember that I pledged to donate a portion of the profits on the sale of Rescue Me, Maybe to MAF, and I've extended that pledge for this year as well.

Today I wanted to write about some ways, besides buying Rescue Me, Maybe, that you can put the fun in FUNding and help MAF raise money for canine cancer research.

Join a Walk!
Each year, MAF holds K9 Cancer Walks to raise funds for research. You can check out the remaining events for this year (all in CA or TN) here. The hubs and I went with Abby to the San Diego walk back in 2011. I blogged about it here, and got all of 1 comment, so since most of you weren't around back then, I'm recycling some pics!
The crowd of walkers; it was a lovely day
Abby, the 3-legged wonder, insisted on leading everypawdy!
Our familial unit at the walk
Hopefully one of these days, Rita will be okay in crowds and we can join in on a walk again. It was a lot of fun! And Abby brought home a ton of swag!
"Look at all my fun swag!"

Enter a Contest! Do you get catalogs from Orvis? Well, if you do, you've probably seen their Cover Dog Contest - and the great thing about the contest is that folks pay $1/vote and the money all goes to MAF's canine cancer research.

As of last year, the Orvis contest has raised over $900,000 so hopefully they'll hit $1 million this year. MAF has used the funds to develop early cancer-detection tests and more effective chemo protocols for dogs. They also helped fund 150 canine cancer studies at 28 colleges. MAF has also committed to funding the groundbreaking Golden Retriever Lifetime Study, which you can read about on Peggy's blog today.

We entered this pic of Abby a few years back, and came in 3rd place (out of about 2000 entries) for "most unique number of voters". (And that entry in the contest was the reason they invited us to go to their gala for free this year! Major bonus!)
How did this gorgeous girl not end up in the catalog??
The contest is open until March 31, and if you enter by February 15th you'll be entered in a random drawing to win some pretty fabulous prizes.

For some added contest fun, check out this video with the "Most Interesting Man in the World" trying to convince his dog, Willy, to enter the contest. Cute!

Thanks for reading, and hope you'll join the hop!

    1. The gala was in October - I'm not sure if they have it every year at that time, but we went to last year's. It was really fun!

    1. I know - you'd think the judges would have selected her for the catalog - especially since she was a cancer girl, and the contest raises money for cancer!

  12. What great ideas to have a little fun while helping to fund research. I love to do walks for fundraising, maybe one day they'll have one like that in our area. My dogs aren't so great in crowds either, except for Kobi who just can't walk that far anymore. Sheba did OK last time I took her though, once I finally got her to settle down. Hopefully Luke will like getting out too!
