Under Construction... Almost

We here at Chez Pooch Smooches are on the eve of a kitchen renovation. (Ugh.)

Rita and I have donned our safety goggles and hardhats (not pictured) and are ready for the work to begin!

Okay, maybe she only donned her goggles for a moment or two...

"Take these off me, woman."

I love how this shot came out.

Anyway, although we're ready, we're dreading it. Rita and I both dislike having strange men in the house (although all the subcontractors I met today seemed very nice - and one of them has two corgis, so I totally bonded with him!), and we dislike noise and having our routine disrupted, so hopefully this won't be a looooong drawn out project. (The changes are all cosmetic, nothing structural, so in theory it should go pretty quickly!)

Poor Rita might have to also don her Thundershirt and snack on some of her calming treats to get her through this. Wish us luck!

How does your pet do with strangers in the house?

    1. Thanks! They are banging on things pretty loudly right now so Rita and I are about to head out for a loooong walk!

  2. At least you can take comfort in the fact that you get to rock some pretty paw-some glasses!!!

  3. Once it's over, kitchen upgrades are the BEST!

Jimmy and Wilson bark their heads off for 5 minutes, sniff the guys, and then go to sleep. They aren't worriers!

  4. We say take a mini vacation and come back when the work is done. Glad she has her safety glasses on!

    1. Oh, I wish we could move away for a month! Like folks do on all those remodel shows where they just show up and the house has magically transformed!

  5. Hope all goes smoothly. I usually take the boys upstairs when strangers are in the house or no one would get anything done. Booker T paces because he wants down to find out what is going on and Cassius wants to attack (which to him means jump all over everyone and lick them to death and maybe throw in a growl here and there to keep you on your toes). Love the goggle pics.

  6. My dogs like for people to sit down and give them attention. Workers who work not so much. Hope this goes smoothly for you.

  8. It is nice to update things even if you have to put up with contracters!

    1. Yes, it will be nice. And luckily we do like our contractor. But all the subs - well, we don't really know them. (And Rita hates them all!) :)

  9. Haha you are too cute! Looking shaaaaarp, are those glasses Prada? ;)

Keep up the awesome posts! Casey

  10. Rita, your glasses look great on you. I love that last shot too. Even though it's disruptive, it sounds like it's all worth it. Renovations are refreshing when they're done. Rita, you should ask mommy to add built in dog bowls for you :)

    1. I do wish we were redoing all the cabinets - if we were, I'd definitely have them add built in bowls! But since we are keeping the same cabinets and just getting new doors/drawer faces, that will have to wait for our next house!

  11. I'm in the middle of renovating TWO bathrooms. My main bath; and the bathroom in my in-law apartment. So, I have a third bathroom that is fine, thank goodness, but it means I have to traipse downstairs every time I need to use the facilities! My dogs do ok with strange men in the house. The main guy is my friend and maintenance man who has always done all the work here... but he brings in plumbers, electricians, bla bla bla. The dogs are so friendly, it's ridiculous. The biggest problem is the disruption of the routine, coupled with doors being left open and a dog running around the neighborhood (has happened 3 times this week alone!).
I LOL'd at the cool picture of Rita in profile with her goggles!

    1. Oh, that's a bummer to have to go to another floor to use the bathroom. But, like us, it will be so nice when everything's new and shiny!

I guess that's a good thing about Rita not being friendly - I don't have to worry about her wandering out an open door, since she's locked up in the back of the house! :)

  12. they make calm you down snacks? For people too? I could use some this week. LeeAnna who also hates having strange men around the house, using her bathroom, making noise. eww.

    1. I wish they made calm-down snacks for people! (Well, wait... I suppose they do - in CO, and WA... and soon in CA.) :)

  13. When there were workers in my kitchen, I packed a picnic for us and we spent the days in the park or hiking. Neither of us like noise so it was a good choice even though by day 4 I was ready for them to be done! Why haven't they invented doggie ear plugs by now???

    1. Seriously on the doggy ear plugs. Or those Bose noise cancelling ones...

I would love to do a picnic with her - today we did a 2 hr walk - but we are heading into like 5 or 6 straight days of rain, so that's going to be a bummer! At least it should be quieter/less hectic with the demolition being done!

    2. When the weather wasn't that great, we hung out in the car in the park. :) I don't know how Rita would feel about that. Blueberry was mellow and napped and I read a book.

    3. That's a good idea. Maybe we'll try that - if it's just sprinkling she'll want to get out and walk around. If it's pouring though, she'd probably rather stay home - I think the noise when it's really stormin' out concerns her.

  14. Oh, you're inspiring me, Jackie! I've been putting off our kitchen remodel far too long because we want to change some wall structures. I've been wondering how that's going to work with Haley and all the commotion, so I'll be watching for some tips. I'm anxious to see your new kitchen too!

    1. I hope I'll have some good tips. So far my only one is - try to do the work in the spring/summer so you can get out during the day with Haley! As I mentioned above, I took a looong walk with Rita today to get away from the noise and tire her out, but we're heading into a long rainy patch, which is going to be a bummer!

  15. Hope it all goes well! Construction and house projects are always so stressful. Ruby hates having strange men in the house, too

    1. Yeah, I put off projects all the time to try to avoid upsetting her. Thanks for the good wishes!

  16. Of course, I feel exactly the same as you about having strangers in the house, and disruptions to our routine! So I feel your and Rita's pain....I hope it goes quickly and smoothly. It will be worth it when it's done!
We are getting new appliances installed today (we're re-doing our kitchen partially too but piece by piece, not all at once) and that will be more than enough commotion for us. There will be a lot of barking I'm sure.

    1. Of course you feel exactly the same way, my sissy from another missy! Good luck with the new appliances! (That is the thing I'm most looking forward to - the new dishwasher! Our old one was the pits!!)

    1. I've been dreading this for months - at least it's finally started so I can begin the countdown to a new kitchen! But wow - a whole house... We did that at our last place, and did a lot of the work ourselves. Of course we were younger and more ambitious back then! Good luck!!

    1. I hope so! There are so many choices to make - it's all anxiety inducing (at least for an anxiety type like me!). Hoping I'll be happy w/ everything I picked!

  19. Good luck. Our recent contractor visit was only one day. Trail spent the day in a crate in the car since he is over-the-top gotta be in the way. Every time I checked, he was sleeping.

    1. That's a good idea. And lucky you - only one day!

Right now I have her locked up in the bedroom - which I feel bad about, but... if this was just a routine day she'd just be sleeping either in the bedroom or sunroom anyway, so I guess I shouldn't feel guilty. (Actually I could make it so she could go in the sun room too - maybe I'll try that.)

  20. Oh how exciting for you! But it can be hard making those choices. We're redecorating the dining room - hallelujah! - but choosing paint and a chandelier are really hard. Be careful Rita it can get noisy and crazy! Bet it will all be worth it though!

  21. Hugs and prayers while you go through this process. When I redid my kitchen I washed dishes in the bathtub for 6 weeks. And ate far too much pizza! Hopefully all will go smoothly for you and you will be buoyed by the end results which will no doubt be fabulous!

    1. Thank you! The one thing that will keep us from eating too much pizza is the hubs' dietary restrictions. He recently found out he's gluten sensitive, and man, GF pizza is just NOT the same! As for the washing dishes in the bathtub - i think that's the worst part of all this!
