Stress-Eating Our Way Through the Remodel

As I mentioned last week, we've just started a kitchen remodel. And, naturally, Rita and I are both finding it stressful.

I have to keep Rita closed up in the back half of the house since she doesn't like strange men in the house (neither do I; and even if she did like them, they're constantly coming and going out to their trucks and leaving the door open, so either way - she's on lock-down).

She's mostly okay, but when she hears them talking too loud (or whistling - she HATES whistling for some reason!), she gets upset and starts barking.

A little shot of spray-cheese is just the thing to take the edge off and put her in a much calmer mood!

Now, for Rita, her go-to anxiety-reducing food is cheese (okay, it's not really cheese - it's some sort of "cheese flavor" substance... the stuff you spray into a Kong); for me it's chocolate!

The hubs bought me something truly dangerous for Christmas... Cadbury Crunchie Spread!

Have you ever had a Cadbury Crunchie? It's a British candy bar that I first discovered when we lived in Bermuda - chocolate wrapped around a honeycomb/toffee center. I used to only be able to have them when the hubs would go to the UK for work and he'd bring me back a bag (or three) of the small-size bars. But now you can get this stuff on Amazon! Dangerous.

But, hey, if I spread it on an apple, it's healthy, right?

Our weather - which has been rainstorm after rainstorm this past week - is supposed to change for the better starting tomorrow, so hopefully we'll go back to anxiety reduction via running/long walks!

If not, we're both going to weigh twice as much by the end of this kitchen renovation!

Are you a stress-eater? If so, what's your go-to?

  1. Having workers in the house really disrupts life, but hopefully it will be all worth it when the kitchen is done. Mom loves Cadbury, yum!

    1. Yes, life is definitely disrupted. As for Cadbury, the Crunchie is definitely my fave or their treats!

  2. Sounds like a really stressful time for you both. Everything is healthier with apples. I bet Cass would love that spray cheese stuff. He's a cheese freak! Hope everything gets finished soon!

    1. THe spray cheese is awesome. It's technically called Kong Easy Treat and it comes in bacon & cheese or liver flavors. Rita is a BIG fan. Helps keep her calm while the gardener is here every other week too. She HATES him - just walking into our yard like he owns the place! ;)

    1. When I get REALLY stressed, I can't eat at all either. But when just mildly stressed (like now...), I crave comfort foods. And, yes, chocolate should be considered medicinal.

  5. Aww man. it's hectic around there! I've never heard of Cadbury, but I'm not a lover of sweets. I'll take anything of a salty, vinegary sort.

    1. My hubs is the same - he is way more a salt-craver than a sweets eater. I wish I was the same!

  6. Hey, Rita, don't worry about hating whistling...Humphrey believes everybody does. Enjoy your treats!!! <3

    1. The hubs is a chips guy too. Oh man. A donut... I haven't had a good donut since July. I might need to go get a donut one day during this thing! (A chocolate one of course.)

  8. LOL, when I remodeled my kitchen, washing dishes in the bathtub got old fast so I started ordering pizza. By the time it was done, I couldn't look at a pizza for years! Nutella on the other hand... 😇

    1. Yeah, every day I dread the clean up in the bath tub! We've been trying to do a lot of paper plates because of that (we're being terribly un-green during this...) but pizza... Well, we used to love pizza but now that the hubs found out he's gluten sensitive, it's just not the same! :(

  9. not so much but that cadbury stuff could bring me over. Cole would not eat if stressed. Oh, I just saw monika mention pizza... but I eat that stressed or not! Poor Rita! I just had the cable guy here Friday for over two hours and I was stressed. Of course it's still not fixed so tomorrow he's coming back. where's the pizza!

    1. Rita is the same if she's REALLY stressed, she won't eat anything. But if she's down a coupla notches from maximum, then the spray cheese works really well!

Yes, you definitely deserve pizza after 2 hours of cable guy plus more to come!

  10. Sweets (pretty much anything) or potato chips. Hope your weather gets better so you can get out more! We got snow then ice this week so it's just treacherous outside. Time to get the tunnel out again!
By the way, I got your card, and thank you very much. It was so cute, and I really appreciate you (& Rita) thinking of me. ♥

    1. Oh, good. Glad the card got there. :)

The weather is definitely improving! Unfortunately though we were still stuck at home all day... waiting for delivery of one of the appliances. Waited all day and then found out it's not coming until between now (3) and 5. oy.

  11. Ha! I'm sitting here catching up on blogs eating potato chips with red wine while the hubby and I discuss a strategic plan for moving 20 miles without paying a moving company. Guess I am a stress eater LOL

    1. Haha. Mmmmm. Chips. Moving is definitely stressful! Our last move was only about 6 miles, which was good and bad... Bad because I moved a bunch of the stuff by myself, one car load at a time! But good because then I could unpack one car load at a time - I didn't have an overwhelming bunch of boxes all delivered at once! (We did have to hire some guys to move the big stuff though!).

  12. OMG, I love the pic of Rita chomping down the spray cheese. Priceless! (And I need to get some for Seriously.) My partner remodeled our living room last winter. I wisely flew down to the East Coast and stayed with my sister for the two months it took him to finish. This, I think, saved our relationship, lol. But he did a damned good job. Cheers and hope you all have a great weekend.

    1. Seriously would love it, I'm sure. (It's the "kong easy treat" in bacon & cheese flavor.

Wow, that's nice that you got to flee the scene during the remodel!

  13. Spray cheese?! YUM!! Did you have some or only the Crunchie spread? (I'd have both!) BTW: We have Crunchie bars in Canada but not the spread. Stress eating? It's either everything in sight or nothing at all. Hang in there, the reno will be worth it!

    1. Well, the spray cheese isn't really the human kind of spray cheese - it's the doggy kind, so I only had the Crunchie spread. And since the Crunchie spread is chocolate, Rita only got to have the cheese. But we were both very happy with what we got. :)

Yeah, I'm the same - it's all or nothing with me too depending on how much stress. This isn't really THAT much stress, so it's "eat everything." If only it were MORE stressful, I might lose some weight during this thing. :)

  14. Yummy I've never seen that spread

    1. Probably because it's mainly a UK thing - it's darn tasty. Especially on an apple or banana. Yum. :)

  15. We are having endless construction too, and Shyla really doesn't like having workers who want to interact with her in the house. They need access everywhere so there's no place to hide away. After 2 growling incidents when workers tried to approach Shyla to pet her, I laid down the law that no one was to even look at Shyla unless she approached them. I also started playing the "look at that" (LAT) game - where I ask Shyla "What's that?" whenever a worker comes into sight, and she gets treats after looking at him. So, Shyla is a stress eater. LOL!

Fortunately, I'm not anymore. I was in high school and college but somewhere along the way I stopped. But, I did eat Cadbury Crunchy candy bars in Ireland years ago, and I didn't know that I could get them on amazon. That's my next stop on the internet!!!!!!

    1. Hope you got yourself some Crunchies! So tasty!

I do a version of the LAT thing with Rita when we see other dogs out on walks ("Look at the nice doggy!" She looks at them, then looks at me to get a treat. Maybe if these guys are here long enough, I can train her to "look at the nice construction dude!") :)

  16. We will have to try the spray cheese on Monty next time there are fireworks! Good luck on your construction.

    1. Hopefully it will help! She's funny - she now kinda knows when she needs a "hit" of the spray cheese. When our gardener comes, she'll come running to me with an anxious look on her face, like, 'Hit me, Momma! I NEED the cheese!"
