Road Trip! SD to SD

As I mentioned last week, my siblings, my one sis-in-law, and I all met up in Oacoma, South Dakota to bury my mom beside my dad's ashes. Two of my sisters and I drove - from San Diego to South Dakota - in two days, which seemed like a bad idea on the start of day two, but we had a lot of stuff to bring!

On the whole trip, this was the only dog I got to love on - a carved wooden dog.
Major withdrawals not seeing any dogs! (On the plus side, the black top I wore to my mom's funeral had no dog hair on it. What a concept.)

I did get to love on some horses though...

...and my sis loved on my cousin's barn kitty. (Not me though. Allergies!)

On the way there we zoomed along not really stopping much, but on the way back we took 3 days to drive home so we could see a few things.

First stop was Badlands National Park. It was really cool. My pics didn't do it justice. (Should have taken my big camera! I only had my phone.)

We also went to Wall Drug, So Dak, which is a tourist-trap mall with lots of shops, but it has some goofy/fun things you can do - and it also has fabulous donuts.

One of the goofy things you can do is pose with the elusive (and mythical) jackalope (a jackrabbit with antelope horns).

You can also take a photo with a giant rabbit. I don't know why there's a giant rabbit, but if you do pose with it, I suggest making rabbit ears, of course.

Our last fun stop was Devil's Tower National Monument, which was gorgeous!

We walked around it and saw this guy (the tiny white speck) climbing it. No, thank you!

Of course, one of the best things about road trips is the road snacks!

Except for all the time spent sitting in the car, it was a good trip!

Tune in next week for a different kind of dog post!

How about you... do you enjoy a good road trip? Have you been on one lately?

  1. I love the jackalope. And what's a shirt without dog hair? In fact, I really can't imagine anything without dog hair. Looks like you saw some great sights.

    1. I used to have a jackalope tshirt when I was a kid. It was probably all covered in dog hair all the time. :)

  3. Holy cow, that's a quick trip! Love that part of SD, well...not Wall drug, but the Badlands are great. And Devils Tower in WY, was great too.

    1. Yeah, Wall Drug is pretty touristy-tacky, but we had a fun, quick stop there. Just enough time to shop for Black Hills Gold rings (for a nice remembrance of the trip) and to eat a donut! :)

  4. Now that the snow is gone from the mountains, we will probably be visiting them. My dogs hate snow and refuse to stay beyond one quick pee on it.

    1. Rita's only seen old crusty snow. One of these days we'll take her on a road trip to some snow!

  5. I need some photos with those wabbits! Road trips are good if Mom doesn't have to drive. Usually she is driving and we have mega long days so we can just get to our destination. We need to take more time and make stops along the way.

    1. Yes, you definitely need a pic with those wabbits, Emma!

We are the same - when we go on a road trip, we always just want to get there and we zoom there. We rarely take the time to stop and see stuff! We need to change that!

  7. Wait...what-you didn't take your dog's hair with you? That's a crying shame...what's a road trip without dog hair? 😇 Looks like you had a pawsome trip!

    1. Okay - it took me a minute to get that! I have actually never seen that movie, but I've seen a reference to that scene so I get it! (I really need to watch that!)

  10. I have always wanted to visit the Badlands. I love a good road trip, too. We just took one last weekend to drive my daughter to camp. Ruby came, too, which was fun.

    1. It's definitely fun when the pup can come along! Although Rita would have hated this trip cuz we spent such long stretches in the car! She's not a fan of that.

    1. I remember going to C.H. and Mt. R. when I was a kid, so we skipped those this time. There's a lot of neat stuff to see around there!

  12. Mr. N hasn't been on a long road trip yet. I think the longest one was when we went to Bend which is 3-4 hours.

    1. We took Rita to Bend as well! But from So Cal, so that was a LONG trip!

  13. Any place that has great donuts can't be all bad! My friend and I made the road trip to the BlogPaws conference last year and plan to do it again next year, so I guess it wasn't all bad!

  14. We love road trips and Shasta does too! It looks like you and your siblings were able to take a sad situation and turn it into nice family memories!

    1. That's good that Shasta loves them too. Rita has gotten increasingly more stressed in the car with each trip we take, so we need to work on that!

  15. You missed the Corn Palace? Really? lol The Badlands were very cool, but as hubby and I were hiking around, I sort of got creeped out because we were the only ones there that day and I guess maybe I had watched to many creeper movies. It was a beautiful 60 degree day in October when we were there, but the next day whamo! We got nailed by a blizzard in Deadwood.

    1. Wow, a blizzard in Oct! Crazy. I've seen too many creeper movies as well - that would be a little creepy to be the only ones there. And as for the Corn Palace - I vaguely remember going once when I was a kid. That was enough. :)

  16. Road Trip! One of my favorite things to do is a good ol' road trip. I'm in Pennsylvania right now, writing this! Road trip to PA (from Massachusetts) every summer to see my girl-friends that I grew up with. I enjoy the ride, except I don't enjoy leaving the dogs behind at home.
