More Hiking Mischief

Last week I blogged about our hike with Rita in Marian Bear Canyon in San Diego and the mischief therein. Well, this weekend, we went back, only headed west instead of east like last time.

We saw lots of pretty flowers (or weeds?) growing like crazy.

There were these tall yellow things growing everywhere. They looked really pretty along the hillside. You can see how tall they are in this pic because they are growing up over the hubs' head and he's 6'2".
And some spots were just covered with nasturtiums.

This isn't the greatest pic since I just took all these with my phone, but you can sort of see the color climbing all the way up the hillside.

Okay, so you may be wondering, where's the mischief?

Well, did you notice anything missing from these pics?? Like, oh, say... RITA!

Yes... we did the unthinkable and went hiking without Rita. And on Saturday morning we went for a long walk in the 'hood without her.

Don't worry - she doesn't have an injury that she's resting up from.

Nope. But she does have a weekend house-guest!

Reg is here for a couple of nights and there's been a lot of this:
She LOVES to chew his neck!
And then a lot of this:
And he LOVES to chew her legs!
And some of this:
They LOVE to chew each other!
And then finally they do a bit of this:

They were too pooped to bring along on a long, hot hike so we left them behind.

I'm sure they were perfectly happy to stay home and sleep. But still... I felt a bit guilty.

Do you ever walk/hike/run without your dog? Do you feel guilty when you do?

  1. I always feel guilty if I have fun without Bentley. Guilty parent complex! LOL!

  2. I am not sure brown dawgs would let us leave without them. Saturday we only took Freighter training and you would think the world came to an end for Thunder and Storm....lol. But no we don't feel guilty....haha.

    1. Good for you for not feeling guilty! I've had a life-long affair with Guilt! :) I think it comes with 12 years of Catholic school.

  3. Ugh, we don't do it often but when we do it's a total guilt trip! lol

  4. I think that yellow is wild mustard. There is a story that the friars (Leslie escaped with a small chicken?!) sowed mustard seed as they traveled through CA establishing the missions. Why, I'm not sure.

    1. Lol on the friars/fryers. Interesting... wonder if that's true? Would be kinda cool if it is.

  5. Oh noooo, you DID do the unthinkable ;-) I don't think we've ever hiked without the pups, but whenever I find myself walking somewhere without Missy & Buzz next to me, I feel like I'm missing something. It has honestly become a strange feeling when I walk & don't have leashes in my hands..

    1. I know! When we walked on Saturday it was so weird to be empty-handed! No leash! No water bottle! Didn't know what to do with myself!

  6. I have on occasion left the dogs home. I usually feel empty handed. LOL

  7. You were right when you said Harley & Jax remind you a lot of Rita & Reg - I can see it too. Love those beautiful photos - such gorgeous open space. Don't get to see that where I live unless I travel a distance to get there. Take care

    1. That's one of the (many) nice things about San Diego - we have "open spaces" that are just 10 min from our house. The funny thing is the pics look like we're getting away from it all, but if you could hear the soundtrack to those pics, it's cars buzzing along the freeway that runs parallel to the trails.

  8. Those flowers look so beautiful. And yes usually lots of "bitty-face" leads to lots of nap time lol.

  9. The hiking photos are gorgeous! We haven't left Haley behind very often, but I feel so bad when I do and it's just not as much fun without her along. I'm sure Rita and Reg were happy to have fun together though and I'm sure they didn't mind at all.

    1. Yeah, I don't think they minded. I was sort of glad Rita wasn't there - it was hot (she hates that) and there were lots of times when we had to pull over on the narrow trail for mt. bikes to whiz by.

    1. I may have to join in today so I can get MY exercise. I'm so used to walking Rita for my exercise - but she doesn't need her walk with Reg around!

  11. If I really want to get good exercise, the pups stay home. All that sniffing pretty much kills the aerobic benefit! (And with Wilson approaching 12 in May, he's slowing down even more :-( ) Heat also ruins it for my guys. Cardis don't do hot very well unless there is water involved.

    1. Luckily Rita is (mostly) a really good walker. It's not as good as walking Abby was (that girl would PULL and we would just fly along for ages - pre-amp anyway. And then post amp I had to kinda jog to keep up with her). But Bailey was SUPER sniffy so walking her was slow going and frustrating and not exercise in any way! I'd always have to get my cardio workouts in some other way when we had her!

  13. I get major guilt leaving Mr. N home alone as it is. Not to mention I took up hiking FOR him so no, I've never been hiking without him. He'd probably like it if I took up running too lol.

    1. It is awfully pretty - especially when you consider it's just alongside a freeway! :)

  15. Rarely....because I feel too guilty! I imagine how nice it would be to walk or hike freely though, at my own pace, and not being dragged along or having to stop when I don't want to! LOL My hubby will go running without them...men just don't have the guilt thing, do they?

    1. Hmmm. Here I've been thinking my guilt issues come from 12 years of Catholic school... but the hubs went to Catholic school too (although not 12 years!) and he doesn't have the guilt thing. Maybe you're right and it's a gender thing!

  17. Mom doesn't leave us behind ever on walks. She did train for her last marathon all alone and felt bad about it, but Katie was too old to run so far and my legs are too short. Now she has Bailie to run with and she only runs 3-5 miles.

  18. Great flowers and foilage! We're still under many feet of snow. Guily of leaving dogs at home? Yup. Rarely but it happens. Sometimes, you just have to! Then there is the guilt of who to take this time, who would like a certain area better, etc. (sigh)
